Personally, I would leave and find a safe spot and then wait to reclaim my stuff.
The louder it is, then the closer it is, then it's usually above you.
I recommend finding a working vehicle early on and as soon as you hear the heli get in your car and try to get to a secluded spot avoiding zeds as needed and eventually the heli will just leave and there shouldn't be too much cleanup to do back at home.
What I found works best is get as far as you can from your base ASAP. Keep moving, but run and fight as little as possible to conserve stamina. I'd end up with a gigantic horde behind me, eventually the chopper would go away, I'd run through some forest to lose them all, and head back home.
Now grab a running car, a campfire kit, some fuel and a few beers. Park the car driver side up against a indestructable wall. Now get out and place the kit and some fuel and light the fire. Sit in driver side until event is over and all the zombies are nice and crispy.
Congrats you just cleared out the neighbourhood.
Big Brain tip: Do not do this near structures you care about/want to loot
