And power is most certainly NOT free in the USA. The closest to free you'll get is your own personal solar grid, or if you found a spot that lets you chop/forage for wood. Which, by the way, you can. A lot of wooded areas have programs where you can collect dead wood and the like for firewood.
What most folks due, is place their antique oven on the second floor, where they knock out one or two walls, extend the floor there, to make a garden. And move a bed/or use an existing bed nearby so they do not freeze during the winter. (Allthough with certain traits like outdoorsman you can be a bit more tolerant towards cold)
