(spiked) baseball bats will get you killed
There's something off about the turning speed in combat stance with the bat which causes the character to be susceptible to getting hit/bit even with high nimble. Crowbars are significantly faster and more durable even if you miss out on a tiny bit of damage from the spikes. I think I lost 10 characters to the spiked baseball bat so far, each with 1000s of kills using long blunt weapons.

I found it did surprisingly low damage? I was like "how many hits would I really need with a hooked piece of solid metal to kill this thing??"

I thought the sledgehammer did the most damage or is that not in the same category?

I like using a woodsmans axe...usually 1 hit 1 kill...but it does have a slow recovery time

I have to disagree. A bat or a spiked bat are my go to weapons before I get my hands on an axe. I don't know what your issue actually is, but I can tell you that it is in fact you and not the bats.

Someone really needs to learn how the durability system works.

On topic, I'd like to see some videos.

From the wiki (assuming these values haven't changed):

Crowbar: damage 0.6 to 1.15, crit chance 35, crit damage x6, speed 3, durability 15, durability loss 1 in 70.

Spiked bat: damage 1 to 1.5, crit chance 30, crit damage x5, speed 3, durability 15, durability loss 1 in 10

So, same speed. Spiked bat does more damage (both base and when it crits). Both have same durability, but bat loses durability much more quickly. Didn't list them above, but both have the same fatigue cost (2).

Because you enabled multiple target hit in the sandbox, or it is enabled in your preset game. When it is enabled it affects nearly all weapons.

Depends what weapon he compares it to, and what clothese he is wearing.
If he is one of those full fireman clothing guy, then it is very likely his fighting and movement/turning speed is seriously reduced. However with more agile weapons he did not notice.

I'll use shovels sometimes if I think I'll be fighting outside and I have a light weapon to switch to when it breaks or I'm worried about exhaustion. They hit pretty hard and I usually get a lot of them. I don't like them in any kind of tight quarters, but they're really handy for roadside cleaning while driving.

These mortals don't know a plain baseball bat can do more than a spiked bat, if you actually tested it out, spiked bats are less durable, drains your stamina even faster, slower swings, lesser knockback for just a small increase in damage. A baseball bat imo kills way more and is way efficient in killing, I find myself ending megahordes way easier and faster than a spiked bat.

You came off as so convinced of yourself it's usually a waste of time to correct false information, as they usually get all defensive and start flame wars. Your response kinda indicates that is precisely what would have happened.

as for your question why the mechanic is that way: That's how the maintenance skill plays into the game. With a flat durability reduction like any other game without a maintenance skill does it, the skill wouldn't do anything.

Ah, I was not aware of the durability loss mechanics. Thank you for explaining that. I don't really see the point of doing it that way though. Why not just give a crowbar 1050 durability and a spiked bat 150 and have weapons reduce by 1 per hit? Seems to only create confusion.
No problem! 🙂

The devs seem to like their randomness. I think they chose make it work that way so you don't 100% know when your weapon is going to break. For example, I started up a new game last night and was using a stone axe, which has 5 durability and a 1 in 5 chance off durability loss. So it could break super quickly. I was just planning on using it for a little bit for some axe XP, but it's strangely kept itself from breaking while sitting at a single durability left, just because of the RNG.
