Heck, if you drive south of the crossroads, you can find March Ridge. The zombie density there is about equal to Rosewood, making it a good place to set up base without getting TOO overwhelmed(compared to Riverside and Westpoint).
Sneak build(8~10 Fitness, +3 sneak, +1 sprint, +2 lightfooted, Inconspicuous, graceful):
Typically this works anywhere, but you won't be taking down zombies, much less hordes of 3 or more of them without expert/careful play. Usually has spare points to put into either combat or life skills.
Offensive build, preferably with Lumberjack profession (8~10 STR, 10 Fitness, +1~3 Blade/Blunt Accuracy, +1~3 Blade/Blunt Maintenance, +1 Carpentry)
Works anywhere, can definitely take down hordes of 100+ with an axe equipped, requires thorough knowledge on zombie speeds, proper kiting, and swing timing/accuracy. Generally lacks the free points to go into "life" skills, and requires a lot of negative traits to function.
Forager/Farmer/Fisher/Trapper builds, all of these work out in the wild, where you won't see much action/zombies. Build how you want, but make sure you pair it with at least +1 to cooking and fast learner. Usually has a lot of spare points to put into either combat or sneaking.
The game is meant to be played any way you want it to, so find the style you like the most, and stick with it.
Apocalypse is for the people with high experience, typically not for new players. If you're new and start with apocalypse, you have to learn real fast or you'll almost always die within the first 3 days.
Survivor is the "general" play for most people. Not too hard, not too difficult.
Builder...? Sandbox? Custom settings.
Honestly, if you're new, i'd suggest doing survivor first, see what you like and find difficult there, then play on sandbox and tweak the settings. Sandbox default settings are equal to Survivor, so you only need to make minor(or major) changes based on what you want.

There were more locations, they're just not coming to mind atm.
Thank you for writing this btw...
If you are new this is probably the best place to start learning how to play. It really worked for me. I also started with sandbox and tweaked some of the zombie and disabled fast shambles just so i could get used to fighting off zeds without getting overwhelmed. You can also increase the starting skill point pool and give your self some extra perks.
The second location was going to be my recommendation. Start in West Point and leave town to the west. Follow the river or road and you’ll get there. It’s a good remote location with water access to boil, fishing and foraging, plenty of trees to cut down. I’ve had the helicopter event there in Apocalypse mode attract nothing.
I’d recommend finding a saw before going to cut logs into planks. You can forage for materials to make stone axes and hammers and make spears and stone knives until you can find better weapons.
In Survival, you can settle a lot of places, safe for the densely populated areas such as central Westpoint and commercial Muldraugh. Enclosed residential district in eastern Riverside is probably as good for choosing a safe house as you will get, at least in terms of being close to the juicy looting areas nearby. Most towns have suburban areas with very thin zombie populations and basic accomodations, but you'd want to find a car as soon as possible to live from there.
You really should try to explore the world yourself in order to understand the specific features of the different towns.
there is an auto shop, gas station and a cafe nearby as well as the trailer park but there is a heavy populated factory across but still far enough away to begin with but the rest is generally easy spawn if existent and the farms are all over the place too around like the ones closest tot the north but also the rural area farm store is basically on the other side of the country club house.
But that ain't it either, the river isn't far, but if you find an axe and make a clear cut path to the lake by the large country club house where you could even fish in the pool (or use Right Click menu and choose Walk To and you will easily bypass trees, you can even hold shift to run.)
The house ir pretty heavily populated though but you can escape back to through trees alot quicker then they can and if you built a path they will just quickly lose you no problem and this is part of a larger gated community area of huge houses as well which you pretty much can just drive past and not be bothered with at all if you wanted but I prefer the fishing area by the bridge near the interesection right in between all that I am talking about here, cuz you just pull and fish and go you could even make a safe little escape room on the bridge to protect yourself since alot of stuff you will want to pull from the rural areas which will include most if not all your fishing gear that you'll find.
