Those early TV shows are great for giving a boost to XP on various skills. VHS tapes are to make it so you don't need to catch every TV show. Also, remember that the tech in this is based on the 90s. Old fashioned TVs are commonplace. You'll find ones that work with dials buttons or sliders on the front still at that time and no modern fancy digital interfaces and readouts or thin LCD flatscreens.
