My favorite is a house in Muldraugh on the block south of Cortman Medical. On the same side of the street as the FOR SALE house, with a gas grill in back. There is an impenetrable wall across the back yards and lots of trees to fortify with. I usually start by running log walls from the corners of the neighboring houses to the back fence and to the street, using the whole house as a barricade. Then I start building my compound inside that. Good reason to start as Carpenter

Well, it depends on what you like to do.

If you are not much into buidling, any of the larger flat roofed building with as few stairs as possible is your best bet (schools, gigamart, even the cinema or mall could be candidates). Other possible candidates but a bit tricker to do are the fully high fenced areas (if those fences are still undestructible AND you do not destroy any of them), two of which are to the north-eastern part of the map.

If building is your thing, then it's a world of possibilities. My favorite is building over water, as it's impassable from zombies. You can also, akin to the fully fenced strategy, build a small bridge accessible only by escape ropes (using a temporary stair so it requires a decent bit of prior carpentry). The proximity to water gives you access to a good source of food that can be supplemented by farming and other skills. As such a base requires little to no walls, it is fairly cheap on nails.

Gas station in Dixie would be my choice for a single central base location in a long run, assuming you want to hit up any and all of the other locations. Plenty to loot around the town, essentially infinite gas once you find a generator, close to at least two antique stoves, and perfectly positioned to strike out at any other town/area on the map.

(For reference, in case you don't know the location, it's the gas station just up the road from EP Tools. Cell 24x27 on the Zomboid map project site)

3 antiqu stoves as there is one just west within the lodge in the forest.
Since there are a lot of ruined cars there once you hit level 2 in mecha and 1 in elec you can bring those to surround the gas station with. Also not worth to fortify DIXIE since it is a good place to get handguns and ammo from zeds.

Easier to defend places are Rosewood the construction site, Riverside wreckers and Muldraugh's walled in house.

I actually have the Dixie trailer park gas station as a base, and the other gas station north of that place, beside the used cars.

Also northwest from West Point the three houses is also a very good place. Each house has a built in fireplace, south by the lake is a fishing house with an antique stove. WP is just 3 hours of walk, or you can use cars, to get your gennies and gas.

The Inn in muldraugh, Wall of the first level for a slightly safer area of 4 rooms. Not too close to dense pop areas and a grocery just down the road for food(don't forget to stuff everything into the cooler or it goes off too soon) allowing you time to get set up.

McCoy's seem to be a solid place until the helicopter drops by at least.
Get your carpentry up, expand to a roof area, build a look-out tower, remove the stair, have fire in the tower with ropes to get up to it. Wall off McCoy's with logwalls perhaps, or not. But that's a good reliable place.

I've been trying to practice my survival but I keep getting curbstomped by random wilderness zombies that come out of the darkness, or the lack of reliable source of water or food, so I've planned on making my way to the Cabin in the Woods to set up a survival base there but so far my attempts have failed.

My latest spawn put me in the Country Club. I've never been there before. In a multiplayer setting, that place would be fantastic. Seal it off, make it secure, and then everyone could have rooms and stuff.

If you can, the Mall in the North-East is potentially a good spot but may be hard to get all the xombos away. Aside from that, there's a reliable Warehouse at the very top North-East as well. The Bridge connecting these two places may be full of cars, but just drive your car across the railroad and it'll be fine.

There are too many places find yours make it your own. Be original.

For what's it worth currently at Valley station gas place, Full house with pump out the front door ;)

What you might want to look for is a location that already has 'few' zombies. Then start building.

If you have to clear out a whole bunch of zombies to 'make your base' then you're going to be clearing out a whole bunch of zombies every day to keep your base.

Not necessarily. There are ways, not just cheezy but legit ways to make a place safe. For instance i could wall off the whole of Dixie trailer park with logs.
But i would lose more than i gain, since the zeds that dwell there have a good chance of dropping a gun, or useful extra items. Not to mention some of the not that common t-shirts etc can also be found. (Rock T-shirt for instance is common here, whereas in towns it seems RARE)
In Muldrough i found barely anything useful on the zeds, near the car shop, both at the main road and both behind the huge wall in the suburban area. Whereas in Dixie i find usefull stuff most of the time on the zeds.

One of the spot I mentionned that is fairly close to water and foraging and only 4 stairs to destroy to make entirely secure. It has huge sections of flat roof, a decent portion accessible without needing to build a stair.

You can create log walls to create safe spaces for fishing/foraging. Those can be climbed over without the need for a rope.

Not sure if you can use them inside to protect the ropes to the second floor though.

Of course, first you will need a sledgehammer.

I like the Large Warehouse by the Storage Lots just off Westpoint, I use the Storage Lot Fence, and the brownfence that blocks the Tracks, plenty of wood too. build more walls at the back where the little Storage unit use, make yourself a little back yard with it. more walls to block the front and it's reletivley safe; plus the gas station and Diner is right on the other side of the street

I really liked this one back in the day:
https://map.projectzomboid.com/?#0.5527678206607227,0.08990818604446857,557.2893553223389
Destroy stairs here or wall off with cars(need a lot of cars, though). I did both ways on different PT.

Then i tried this one too:
https://map.projectzomboid.com/?#0.559141372110822,0.28719348823232854,387.00649675162447
Wall off possible 1st floor entries with cars and build how you wish from there.

Another one spot that's amazing for build v41
https://map.projectzomboid.com/?#0.32718462214509675,0.29104323189643594,155.52923126913922
Just block the entry with one (big) or two smaller cars and clear the place. You will need to build some stuff later here (facilities are lacking) and brings good fridges/etc. Amazing potential, though.

This is a spot that i used with friends when we played ver40.
https://map.projectzomboid.com/?#0.45149355407300995,0.18950637653377386,351.17626457281364
Use some cars to block all windows, we didn't block the doors, but builded some stuff/traps/etc outside the building. Enter via rops on 2nd floor or via main doors (if you don't plan to block them).

Basically, when you decide on your base you'l need to take these things into account:
- How many infrastructure is there already (fridges, etc), then bring a missing ones.
- Look at possible infiltration routes from zombies perspective, block these with cars and secure a safe multiple way to reach 2nd floor via ropes. Build things if necessary.
- How far it is from city, if you build in the center, you'l get more random zombies, compared to outskirts, etc.
- Nearby Gas station is a plus, but not a necessity. You can store enough fuel in cans.

Hope this small advice helps.

Thanks for all of yours advices. Going to play on v41 cause it's much more dynamic than v40<...
