I took a break for a year and came back seeing this. What happened to my beloved Destiny 2? Is it safe to hop back in and invest time again?

It's hard to know the player count from Steam, they don't count Epic or consoles and this is an off time of the day and season.

I don't understand why people decide things based on what others think so much.

The season is kinda dry, alot of people have moved on from the gimmick of the new sub class and the content rolling out this season has been slow (a lot of rehashed and reused content thats been recolored and promoted as "new"). Ive seen more console players then pc players lately when I've been on. The game still doing well on console but its def slowing down since the layoffs that happened recently at bungie and announcement of smaller updates vs the big expansion updates they will be doing in the future.

Keep in mind that the game uses crossplay for PvE activities. Even if the playerbase is 'low' on Steam (not counting Epic Games platform) you still should be able to find plenty of people while playing matchmade PvE activities.

PvPvE such as Gambit and PvP such as Crucible doesn't have crossplay enabled but you can still invite and play with Console players.
Do keep in mind, if a Console player joins your Fireteam while playing Crucible, your whole Fireteam will be put into PC lobbies.
I'm not sure about Gambit but it's probably the same.

Acts with the current solstice event should make at least some retention, but damn. This year solstice event is a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ and making an entire activity to grind 2 new weapons sounds absurd

True, but if the insider reporting is true then destiny 2 is essentially gonna be midseason ALL year
