How do you start with this game?
I've played a little, but it honestly feels like starting to watch season 14 of a show without having seen the previous ones.
How did you start with this game if you didn't join in at the start?

You just play the game. Unlock the subclasses, do ritual activities, get exotics, farm for god roll weapons.

As someone who played the first game and stopped for a few years let me tell you what I did lol
Best place to start is the "new light" story quest. It's tedious but it's good at telling you the basics about races and what not for lore. After that I recommend going into your director and looking through the "timeline" in the top right. If you don't have the expansion packs you can just play through those one at a time to get a basic run down on what's going on. It still leaves out a lot honestly because although the missions are kinda re-playable, it also tells the story in the present (so with the final shape expansion pack) If you DO have the other expansions I'll tell you what I did. I looked at the timeline and saw the name and location of each mission on the timeline and then exited it to go to the planet and look for the title of that mission so I could play a little but more of the story than whatever is on the timeline. Then when I finished the missions (at least the main story and not side quests because yikes the early expansions were not well written) THEN I went and did the quest on the timeline to help fill in some missing gaps.

Sorry I know that's a lot but I hope that helps you get started! Even as a person who played a long time ago and returned to the game, it confused me on where to even begin.
I was dropped at the beginning when I played. Waking up to my Ghost. So, I don't know what y'all mean.
Just try things out, find something fun that you enjoy doing and do that. The rest will come naturally as you explore the game.
I love Gambit.

I started playing and eventually searched out the lore later, I don't know how I found Byf and I don't even remember a time before Byf but it must have happened.

For some reason Bungie is absolutely obsessed and dead-set on obliterating any semblance of continuity and immersion for new players. A new player can start the game for the first time, log out, and then the game forces them into the intro mission of the current storyline. Bungie is run by fools who have never played Destiny, or any video game, and have no idea how to run them.

The expansion/stories go in this order.

Base Game(Cosmodrome/EDZ/Nessus/Dreaming City) -> Shadowkeep -> Beyond Light -> Witch Queen -> Lightfall -> The Final Shape -> Echoes episode -> Revenant Episode(ongoing)

Oh doctor, wouldn't you like to add red war and Forsaken to this flow :) (Everytime I see something like this it happens)

WOW I guess I need to re-post this because the Bungie shills that call themselves mods literally deleted my last post for being "disrepectful" (to whom? the faceless corporation that is Bungie? Please get a grip)

OP you're probably not going to get an honest answer from the simps in the sub, but the simple fact of the matter is there is no way to play the original story (Red War, Forsaken, etc) without watching youtube videos.

It's not a game friendly to newcomers who actually care about the story. Bungie decided to be cheap and lazy, and delete a whole bunch of important content when their game became too big too add new content to (instead of spending the money and making a new game / sequel. you know, like literally every other game studio does in that situation)

Man that's a bummer, there's some stuff i really liked, but without getting to sink my teeth into the story myself, i just can't find the drive to play this game again. It just kind of feels like you do whatever to get loot for pvp or dungeon/raid stuff.

Heard it's been a blast playing since launch though.

press TAB then select Vanguard and then do some easy Vanguard Strikes and the battlegrounds

it's all easy auto team stuff where u don't need to pay attention and can just have some team dungeon fun without all them raiding stuff but still super Fun

you might wanne just start collecting some weapons and see how they play -> just try out things and use the Quest navigator for recommendations of what to do next but first i would:

do all Vanguard Stuff until there are no yellow dots there no more :)

at some point u wanne check out the whole build / perk / weapon perks Stuff and understand how it works and then test out some stuff and create yo own build which is VERY fun imo CHEERS
