Can I not actually play the campaigns solo?
I'm trying to enjoy the game at my own pace, and I keep getting people in my missions that are just running through and completing stuff before i even know what has happened.

I was trying to sort out my keybindings and they were so far ahead by the time I realised I was paired with other players, that I just quit out of the game.

if you cannot actually run a true solo game, I don't know if I'm going to like playing this.

Actual story/campaign missions are solo, strike missions and seasonal activities are not.

Campaigns? Campaigns don't actually have matchmaking, Strikes or Nightfalls are not campaigns, different things from campaigns. The currently available campaigns in the game are Beyond Light and Witch Queen.

Thanks guys. it's all a bit confusing still. I'm actually enjoying it when other players jopin in though. It's just been so long since I played multiplayer, and I'm old and stuck in my ways, ha ha.

Well... once you've completed the Witch Queen Campaign (either solo, or in a pre-made co-op fireteam) there's one mission a week that you can replay that does have matchmaking. Which mission it is varies.

A number of the Patrol zones have Public Events, which are generally done with pickups that just happen to be playing in the same instance as you. Sometimes the events are pretty easy and can be done solo if no one else is around. Sometimes they're more challenging. Also, most Public Events have a Heroic mode which can be triggered by doing something during the regular version.

(For example in the EDZ there's a Glimmer mining event, the Fallen try to mine three times. You can just kill them and complete the event, or, you can destroy the special modulator (in each of the three locations) if you do that, then you get the Heroic verison).

There are also some zones that are pretty much dedicated to continuous group activities, like Sorrow's Harbor on the Moon, or the Calus' ship Containment event for S17, or the Blind Well event in the Dreaming City. Again, those are technically all pickup activities, but they are usually done in a group.

Thanks, appreciated. Honestly it's a pretty confusing game, so every bit of info really helps.

Tell me about it, I logged out halfway through one mission, when I logged in I was in a totally different area, doing a totally different quest. I have no real clue what is going on storyline wise as its just shoved me into a totally different mission, the only thing I know thanks to MEz Koo, is that I am apparently now doing the first season of the haunted missions, its more that it did it by itself without any warning or choice that bothers me a little.

Partially because you need to do the quest for the seasonal artifact, but also because there were problems in the past of people constantly whining "how do I get the artifact" so Bungie was just like "yeah we're just going to have you put into the mission asap"

Especially when you create a new character, you basically have three "log ins"

The first is the opening New Light experience. The next time you log in, you'll get the Witch Queen expansion beginning, and then lastly you'll get the Leviathan mission on load in

So if you want to avoid all that, finish the New Light intro as quickly as possible, unlock the tower and just start the other two quest lines and then you'll be fine

BUTTTTTT new people obviously don't know that :(

What is the seasonal artefact, and should I go and do that quest right away? I started on the Moon as that's where I go for Shadowkeep. I was just going to do the two add on's before witch queen and then witch queen.

I don't really know anything about the seasonal model, is this something I should do first, please?

EDIT: worth noting that I already had a character from F2P from like a year ago, so I already have my sub classes unlocked and stuff. I did get totally different starts when I logged in a few times, but I just left the mission it put me in and went to the main hub.

Then I looked up how to start shadow keep, and went to the moon and did that. I did the intro mission with the other players and now I need to talk to the NPC.

Should I just continue with this, or should I go to do the artefact quest? if you could tell me where to go to do said quest as well please, would be perfect... thanks.

If you haven't started the quest for this season's artifact yet, it'll boot you right into it the next time you log in...since I think you have, you'll probably need to head to the Leviathan from the Moon navigation screen; as to WHAT it is, it's located under your Ghost Shell in your inventory. As you gain XP during a given season (this is the fourth week of the current season, so 1/3 of the way through it) you'll gain bonus Light levels that help you meet the requirements for higher-Light activities like Heroic Nightfalls; it also lets you unlock the various Seasonal mods, which are dependent on the Season and affect certain things that occur, like having the various anti-Champion mods for the Season or a mod that increases a relevant-to-the-main-Seasonal-activity buff when you have a Glaive equipped.

Newer players tend to get ambushed by the new stuff added pretty quickly; the 30th Anniversary was pretty bad with that since everyone got shunted into Dares of Eternity, and speaking for myself, I was kind of confused as to what the hell was going on when that happened. :D:

As a non-sweat sorta-pro tip, if you have any bounties you need to cash in, wait until after you get the Artifact to do so to get a bit of a boost. ;D

Thing is they probably put me on the artefact quest and I would have left it in order to go to the hub and find where I needed to go for shadow keep.

So I need to find it again. You saying it's also on the Moon, or is that something else please?

Yeah, the first part is for sure. This is what was confusing me a bit as I thought I had to turn off an option for multiplayer or something.

I know with warframe that you need to turn on solo mode in order to not be matched with people for all content.

It would be on the Moon map, down in the bottom-left corner based on my own interface. :P
