Use iron banner gear along with using an iron banner emblem (you can also wear iron banner ornaments over any armor) and do the challenge objectives to max out your reputation gains and claim engrams from Saladman and reset your rank if needed to continue gaining iron banana engrams, once you get a specific weapon drop you can use the engrams to directly choose or "focus" the grenade launcher in exchange for engrams.
Games played certainly isn't indicative of the chances of getting a certain drop but it's disingenuous to say it's irrelevant when you can get the weapons from match completions.
The intention wasn't to be disingenuous but more trying to emphasis the fact that they're almost certainly not going to get the new gun just by hoping for a match completion drop but I edited to be more clear about it.
If they meant to say "after playing 35 matches and turning in engrams I still haven't gotten the weapon to drop" then that would be an entirely different story but personally my metric for getting the drop would be counting engrams not matches because matches aren't where I'll be getting the weapon from.
Will also say that you're by far one of the most helpful users here and as a fellow Destiny veteran I appreciate all the time you put in.
