Need an explanation on quests and the timeline

First of all, I got the legacy edition from epic since it's free and all, did the basic tutorial quests, unlocked my subclasses, I never played destiny 1 so I met cayde for the first time and then they killed him, ♥♥♥♥ you bungie, and now I'm a bit confused, I expected to do shadowkeep but it wants me to do beyond light, is this how it's supposed to be? if so then why's shadowkeep even there?

There is an in game timeline:

Shadowkeep -> Beyond Light -> Witch Queen -> Lightfall

You're probably doing the legends quest or whatever they call the mini missions designed to get you some basic story infomation heading into Lightfall.

so how do I do shadowkeep?

Go to the Tower, and look at the Quest Archive, to the left of the Postmaster. It should have the Legacy campaign questlines there.

it's empty, outside of some exotics I need the forsaken pack for and something related to the lightfall campaign there's nothing

If the big mission icon isn't shown on the moon map then check the quest terminal to the left of the post master (item mail).

after looking at the moon map I have noticed a few icons, Bane of the Swarm at Eris Morn, "A mysterious disturbance" which looks to be a dungeon but it says campaign, and the "Pit of Heresy" dungeon but it says I need to do the "Legacy: Shadowkeep" quest to access it.

Well either that starts the campaign or its the featured weekly replayable mission and we're back to square one.

For Beyond Light, you could also look for a mission called 'Darkness' Doorstep' on Europa, or check with Variks there.

to make it simple. there is a timeline order, but its irrelevant because the other 50% of the original story can not be played.. totally up to you if want to do in order.

It's all one big info dump with nothing that makes any sense to me, missions where one minute im doing it solo and the next im having to enter a mission half way through with people rushing through the level doing things ive never done before that havent been introduced yet im expected to know whats going on. None of it matters though, i'm just there for the shooting things, who cares what these characters want its all a clusterfk anyway.

I just discovered that a cookie oven isnt something in the game world, despite being right in front of me next to the quest giver, its in my damn quest list and im having to go to the internet to discover that because they sprung yet another mechanic out of its arsse and didnt tell me
