As a new player, can I level through just dungeons with random players?
I've played an hour of Destiny 2 and I really like the overall gun gameplay and movement physics. But I'm not into doing heavily scenarized story stuff (especially solo) and I can't tell how much of this I'm going to have to do to progress.

Overall I'm looking for an experience where I just hop in, queue for some mission with matchmaking, spend 10 to 30 minutes killing things with randoms and moving on. Kind of like Deep Rock Galactic for people who know this game.

Will I be able to progress normally through matchmaking PvE activities only?

Edit: also, how much "teamplay" is there during multiplayer PvE content? e.g. are there roles like healer, CC, DPS, etc?

Story missions are solo most of the time and patrol zones are pretty much do what you want and explore.

What you're looking is the vanguard ops (strikes) playlist that features instances missions with 2 other randomly match made players.

Seasonal activities are also usually similar to strikes but require seasons to play them.

You really only get into team play in end game dungeons, raids, and nightfalls otherwise it's pretty much do what you want including support if you want buy there isn't really the tank and healer structure most of the time, everyone usually does dps.

The only semblance of progression in the game is the power level gring aka item level. Everyone starts at level 1600. Up to 1750 you can level up doing absolutely anything, including strikes with matchmaking. After that levelling is completely dependent on weekly challenges. Things like " complete 3 strikes in a certain subclass" or " get 200k points in nightfall". So you can eventually reach the maximum level, but it will take quite a long time.

Destiny 2 is first and foremost a shooter. I mean, all classes shoot with guns, therefore all classes are DPS. Yes, all classes have ways to help the team one way or another, warlocks can put a well that will heal and boost damage in a certain area, titans can put a bubble that will protect players inside of it, and hunters can make allies invisible or weaken enemies. But in the end it all comes down to the fact that this is a shooter, you have to shoot aliens, with guns.

Thanks for these answers. Seems like the kind of game I was looking for. I just need to finish the first introduction quest and start doing vanguard ops then.

Regarding the team roles I was not necessarily looking for the typical tank/dps/healer thing from MMOs but rather the class-based system like in Deep Rock Galactic where each player can DPS but also has some specific utility abilities.
