Are free to play able to raid any of the content or is it only dlc?

There are 2 free to play raids, Vault of Glass and King's Fall. There will probably be another free raid in about 6 months.

Each expansion and the forsaken pack has a raid.
Forsaken: Last Wish
Shadowkeep: Garden of Salvation
Beyond Light: Deep Stone Crypt
Witch Queen: Vow of the Disciple
Lightfall: Root of Nightmare

The free raids are remastered Destiny 1 raids that are released between the paid ones so for example Vault of Glass was between Deep Stone Crypt and Vow of the Disciple while King's Fall was between Vow of the Disciple and Root of Nightmare. The next one in about 6 months is speculated to be Wrath of the Machine and should also be free.

Beyond light and light fall will give you access to the two darkness subclasses but nothing is necessary. Each dlc will give you access to various things like a dungeon, raid, strikes and story content each with their own gear. It's entirely up to you if you want the full experience in terms of available content. With light fall you will have an active year of seasonal content should you decide to get it that will expand upon the narrative given in the base campaign. With each season you will get access to a new game mode such as the current defiant battlegrounds and every few seasons we get a new exotic mission like the current vexcaliber mission.

Does doing any of the paywall raids give any advantage?

Most of that content has a Pinnacle reward for completing it at least once a week, so ... yes.

Pretty much every piece of content includes advantages for completing it. This is an ARPG/looter-shooter style game. If you fight stuff (IE: if you play the game) you get rewards and get stronger.

Owning the paid content gives you more things to do.

Yep, Prophecy is included in the free to play. And a bloody fun experience it is to.
