I bought the recent Lightfall expansion as a new player and I'm struggling to understand what's going on.

Are there any good quality videos/guides that cover the entirety of Destiny's story?

if you want a VERY brief description of the Destiny 2 Timeline you can use the little Timeline option in the upper right of the destinations screen, it'll give a short telling of each season all the way back to the classic D2 campaign "The Red War"

if you want much more detailed info search up "My Name is Byf" on youtube. he has a huge amount of story and lore videos.

The Witness is an ancient threat, possibly/probably the architect of the collapse of Humanity's Golden Age.

The Witness has pursued the Traveler across time and space possibly since before our species even existed.

The entire campaign on Neomuna is ... an interlude, that takes place during the attack on the Traveler. The focus and intent is the presentation of the Strand sub-class. The Veil is ... a MacGuffin of some sort, but it's never made clear what it actually is.

So ... sadly, there isn't a lot of solid story and world building in Lightfall. Honestly, it's filler until we reach the point where we either A: Follow the Witness, or B: The Witness returns

And that'll happen in The Final Shape (Year Seven).

If you want more than that, I'd suggest playing Shadowkeep, Beyond Light and then Witch Queen, in that order.

Without spoiling content for you with the assumption that you haven't completed the Lightfall storyline yet, all I can say as someone who has is that this expansion introduces new elements yet to be explained. Bungie said that many questions left unanswered will be told throughout the next seasons. So if you are asking how we got here, the above is helpful.

Lightfall's story is very poorly written so it's not just you that is confused.

The Witness, wielder of the Darkness, seeks to use the Veil and Traveler to create their final shape. We don't know who the representative of Darkness is yet. Maybe the Veil or Witness. So for now we'll call it the Deep.

The Deep's (Darkness) philosophy is very plainly: survival of the fittest. Kill or be killed. The last thing alive is the "final shape". The Sky's (Light) philosophy is about selflessly helping others and working together to succeed. The Traveler is a representative of the Sky (Light).

Together, the Gardener (Traveler) and Winnower (Deep) play a game of life to develop the perfect organisms. They live, they grow, they develop, they die. Game over, play again. Some conflict arose in that game and it spilled into the Destiny universe. Both the Light and Dark are paracausal forces (magic) that can bend the laws of physics and effect alternate dimensions/realities. Which is how the Traveler terraforms worlds and brings people back to life. It plucks things from other realities. The best it can find.

tl;dr Destiny is a neutral game of life and death. Light is Protection/Life. Dark is Murder/Death. We are struggling to survive. Others are struggling to destroy us.

how far down the rabbit hole you trying to go? there is so much lore and so many videos out there. BYF is one for sure.. there is a 4-5 hour long video to catch up
