Do they still remove old content?
Wanted to give it a try, but only if it includes every dlc prior to the last one...

just to be clear, I can actually play through the whole story from start to finish???
No, the first few campaigns were vaulted and still are. None of the new stuff will ever be vaulted though, besides seasonal activities. Earliest full campaign atm is Beyond Light.

So real answer is no you can't play from start to finish because Bungie STILL hasn't added the beginning back in. They can't simply let you choose which content you want installed which is baffling.

It's not baffling if you actually read why the content was removed in the first place.

As for not allowing a "Choice of installed content" that isn't easily possible as you would have to cater for all parts of the game, then get complaints because people would have to install "Forsaken" say to just do a nightfall etc, it just not viable!

Consoles.

So the Forsaken campaign is gonna be removed in a few days or is it already not there now? I have the DLC package but somehow did BL first and just finished Shadowkeep.
PanVlk Feb 24, 2023 @ 4:03pm
Forsaken campaign has been removed some time ago already.

Shadowkeep came before Beyond Light.....

The main DLC content since Shadowkeep will not be removed, but people really underestimate how much story is included in seasonal content. The fact is unfortunately we will never get to play the Destiny story from start to finish really. If you want to try to absorb the whole story experience, you'll have to spend quite a bit of time outside of the game reading or watching youtube (I'd recommend the channel "My Name is Byf") to wrap your head around all the story.

To be fair the seasonal stuff isn't really "DLC" in this context (imo). When people ask this question like the OP I generally assume they're new and don't know about seasons and are just looking to get started with the game so Shadowkeep, Beyond Light, and Witch Queen are the major dlc to buy and are "safe" to do so as they're not getting removed. The seasonal stuff is there for more committed players that are looking for more and know what they're getting into.

Yes there is a lot of story in the seasons but they're smaller 10$ nuggets of additional content in addition to the more expensive major dlc.

It’s why I haven’t played in ages, everything I paid for at full price was taken away and I will never forgive Bungie for that.

Claimed reason is Bungie's incompetency ("size") and suspected reason is old content would compete with new one and they couldn't half-*** it. (Like they did with BL)

As for DLC packaging, not only they could, they did, because they always had to do it anyway. They'd just need to add few filters for playlist activites and few extra texts (Warning why something is not accessible has been part of game since Y1). That's it. Problem solved. If they wanted...
NF is special case, but fine, you can do temp downlaod of only necessary packages (no need for bulk of voice acting or videos and other irrelevant stuff).

Reposting with hopefully fixed quote tags.

That's incorrect.

The stated reason was that the code was old and sprawling (because of the pace that Activision pushed Bungie to develop at, Activision likes a "build fast, then discard and put out a sequel" pace). The developer tools were obsolete.

It wasn't operationally viable to develop NEW content while also trying to maintain the older content. The older content (regardless of what you believe) was NOT being utilized (at anything even remotely approaching the rate at which newer content was being utilized.

The choice was:

1): Vault the older content and focus on the newer content that the bulk of the player base wanted.

2): Put new development on hold while working on the older content.

Bungie knew it was a choice between evils, but choose the one they thought was the lesser of the two.

If you want the official explanation, that can be found here: https://www.bungie.net/en/Explore/Detail/News/49189

No, that's really NOT how that works. The problems on the user's end were minor (mostly having to do with the users of the older consoles). The key problems were on the Bungie side of the equation, and would NOT have been solved by your proposal.
