Yep, there is Lightfall and The Final Shape so at minimum you have 2 more years of full scale content. Bungie have said that there will be continued support for D2 after TFS but they have not expanded on what form that support will take. But considering they are still running the Destiny 1 severs even though they stopped updating the game like 6 years ago I'm sure Destiny 2's servers will continue to be supported for some time after the last expansion has been released.
It wasn't intended to be this long term of a live service game. Two things are to blame. They claim to have made Activision $1B in Eververse revenue alone prompting them to split their partnership and go solo to chase that revenue on their own. The other being they needed Destiny 2 to hold them over until they could finalize a publishing deal in China to publish microtransaction free-to-play mobile games (before the CCP cracked down on video games). As various game journal articles have already mentioned, pay2win and microtransactions are more culturally accepted in China. So it makes sense from a business standpoint for Bungie.
Since D2 Beyond Light they have made investments in engine upgrades and updates for their artist toolkits. It was the cheaper option than creating D3. Fans were also disappointed by D2 replacing D1 so I'm sure they took that into account too. After their idea to publish games in China kinda fell apart they let themselves be acquired by Sony. They've expanded their studio and even created a sister studio. They're still chasing free to play mobile games, one being a Destiny spinoff. Then you have the new Marathon game coming out. Marathon's story is already told so why not dust it off and use it. It's an extraction shooter like Tarkov so no need for expensive voice actors, cutscenes, complex scripting. It also makes sense to add cosmetics to customize your character.
With that being said, I think it's fair to estimate that they'll either make a Destiny 3 and invest in rebuilding Tiger. That or create/license a new game engine that can handle what they need. Or--- they'll drop Destiny all together. If they got sick of Halo for its story being "too restrictive" and "already told", they can get sick of Destiny too in my fanboy opinion.
All of this being taken and surmised from various articles I've read over the years following D2's development and commentary after release along with my own opinion and observations.
