You need to get new gear (it's better then what we had anyway)
they introduced sunsetting with beyond light
sunsetting means it has a light cap, it cant be infused higher. you can identify sunset gear by the white corner with black icon. normal gear is black corner with white icon
sunset gear can still be used, due to the light limit you can only really use it in legacy content (the same recommended light as the gear), which you can check before loading into the activity.
they sunsetted sunsetting after a while so you don't have to worry about future gear being taken away
consider this a destiny 3 where you start from scratch
To remove what seems to be an element of butthurt in this, they were sunset because of a developmental problem; either give in to power creep so people use the new weapons instead of sit on the same SMG they've been exclusively using for two years straight...or have only a small fraction of the playerbase using the new stuff because they're the people smart enough to not sit on the same SMG they've been exclusively using for two years straight.
But if the old loot remains more desirable, then people prefer that and a key game-play carrot is lost (and/or undermined).
So many games use and obsolescence or durability system. Bungie tried a "hard" obsolescence system with sunsetting. Players hated it.
Players always hate obsolescence or durability systems.
So instead, Bungie switched to a softer obsolescence system, which ... basically works out to powercreep.
Everything from season 10 onward is not affected.
They are no longer sunsetting gear or DLC content
No, any gear you obtain now and going forward will be possible to infuse and continue to use.
But like I said, the newest stuff is always going to be just a tiny bit better than anything from previous seasons. The key example of this is the manufacturer's perks that got added to weapons starting with Witch Queen.
Literally why though?
They are magnitudes worse than any Sunbracers you could get now.
Hell, pulling one from you Collections would be better.
Hey I've got a few old souvenirs too. I still have the last guns Asher Mir and Sloane ever gave me. They're useless of course, but I still keep them. I have the gun Petra killed Uldren Sov with too.
I'm not telling you to chuck out stuff that has meaning to you. I'm just telling you how the basic game-play carrot/stick approach works in ARPGs.
In addition, they've been reissuing most of the old guns with updated perk pools, many of which being stronger than before. As far as armor goes, you can transmog that stuff to turn them into (nearly) universal armor ornaments.
There is also weapon crafting, which allows you to create your own god rolls given enough time and effort. Not all weapons can be crafted, but you can check which ones are craftable from your triumphs tab (under "catalysts and patterns" or something along those lines).
