Destiny also doesn't really have that 'true competitive' factor to it.. You have comp playlist (Glory) and trials, which are the only 2 modes considered to be competitive in a way where as comp these days is also more casual compared to competitive.. Trials is probably the closest thing there is to a mode that's actually competitive, but to do well in there.. You will need to practice a lot.. Sure you can win with ability spam and such, but that isn't going to help you out much..
There are plenty of guides on YouTube about the mistakes you should avoid doing as much, these guides are made by players including falloutplays and cammycakes (Which is one of the best PvP players out there, i suggest looking up his tips regarding PvP).. Most of them might be a bit outdated but they still count..
Sorry for your loss.
Better luck next time.
and osiris trial, where the power matter, and that you will need time
After you get familiar with the basic mechanics, controls and become proficient with gunfights, it will heavily depend on your weapon build. It all comes down to whatever the meta is currently, which is an easy google search away. Destiny PvP has always been unbalanced but it seems the last handful of seasons has made this ever more true. 1-2 hit weapons are favored heavily and a lot of times, being a better player skill wise won't make up the gap when it comes to the TTK of players taking advantage of this fact. The funny thing is, Bungie recently made tweaks to get rid of a lot of 1 hit opportunities within crucible, but it seems all they did was get rid of a few select weapons (or what hit boxes provide a 1 hit with those weapons) and then added more that do the same thing. This of course never addressed the exotic problem children that have always been too OP for crucible (namely special ammo 1 hitters). So, long story short, build your skill and then focus on the meta heavily if you truly want to be competitive.
if you are more of a pve player, you will get wrecked until your learn pvp basics
You can still try enjoy it for what it is.
Also if you are new to the game you may lack crucial gear that most players already have after months and years of playing.
For me PvP was the best part of this game until the removal of Skill Based Matchmaking from nearly all playlists roughly 2 years ago. Apparently they are returning it loosely starting with Season 18 and will make it better overtime. Casual playlists were the best places for learning the ropes and hopefully will become just that again in the near future.
If I were you I'd wait until the 23rd of August and start PvPing then to experience a way better matchmaking than the current one.
Also I'd advise you to not try to get involved in the competitive modes immediately If you truly are a new player and learn the game in future casual friendly playlists like Control after the re-implementation of Skill Based Matchmaking.
Play for a month or two do your dailies and weeklies get some weapons, armor and mods at a normal pace, see where you are at AND THEN give the solo que competitive mode in Crucible a shot, which is called the Survival Freelance.
Unfortunately I lack information about the meta so not going to be able to help you out greatly on that subject but before I left the game to protest the removal of SBMM and a number of other things months ago, free to play players still had a chance to be great in the competitive crucible.
You get to choose if you join chat channels, so the toxicity is low that way, the occasional "ape brain" trying to tbag your "Ghost" revive spot, shrugs... ignore, laugh at their pettiness.
Meta is quite fixed, and you will see what players are shooting at you on each map, easy to get an idea of which weapons go at which ranges. Make note on what players use against you, where they stop, where they throw abilities, etc, I think consistency is a big, if you are like me, hopping in a few hours a week/weekend, yeah that way - it isnt fun. It probably helps if you want to main the game as a PvP only player,- in the sense, you dont have the split muscle memory for PvE, going between the 2 modes is crazy disruptive, very different experience to play them.
I guess a new player cannot really avoid at least a daily login tho, until getting the weapon and armor mods. Xur, a weekly trader often sells decent PvP items.
Because this is a progress/collection game, you are likely better fit to answer your own question after a week of playing, because we tend to lose perspective how long it took us to get a strong/capable inventory build up.
