Question regarding lore around classes
Hi All,

I've been wondering what decides which class a newly ressurected guardian becomes.

When a guardian is ressurected, be it exo, human, awoken, hive or whatever other race. What stipulates which class they will be? Maybe I'm missing something in the lore but here's my logic;

Guardians are clearly bound to their class. Seems to me that Guardians can sort of explore their powers and discover (develop?) New ways of wielding their Light. But every guardian is still constrained to their class.

When we look at the Hive it's clear that
Knights = void/titan(ish)
Acolytes = solar/hunter(ish)
Wizards = Arc/warlock(ish)
Is this due to design desicions at Bungie or actual lore? I understand that this may be a whole other discussion with the Hive guardians but felt like it was still worth mentioning)

So I've got a couple of thoughts. When a ghost chooses and ressurects us he/she:
1. Sees into our last and personality and decides to put us in a certain Guardian category. (Like sorting hat in Hogwarts)
2. The Ghost's personality (or other intrinsic trait) is what decides the Guardian class.
3. It's random.

I feel like so far there have been very clear constraints regarding who and what we are as Guardians but I don't understand where those constraints come from. Why have we not seen a beefy Titan looking dude tossing small nova bombs? Or a nimble hunter slamming his arc fist in the ground.

I'm quite certain I'm missing something in the lore, does anyone know? If it's not detailed, guess it's a cool discussion point. Would love to see a Byf lore video about it.

Class is built upon an affinity or preference. Technically, a Titan is more than capable of using Arc Staff, a Warlock can shoulder charge, and a Hunter can use a nova bomb. Howver, they don't choose to because it's not their specialty.

You do. Guardians learn to use their light just like any other skill. I suppose since the ghosts already know who you are before they revive you they can probably predict oh this guy is going to be a titan or a warlock but ghosts don't choose the class for you.

It's not a set in stone type of thing and there have been examples of classes learning skills from other classes, it's just not the norm. I think this is why the 3.0 reworks are more reflective of the lore as they allow more crossover from class to class.

You're over thinking it: It's a game, the player decides.

It is my most humble opinion that we just don't know exactly how a Guardian's class is chosen, or even if it's chosen at all. It's possible that a Ghost chooses its Guardian's class, or that the Traveler chose it when it created each Ghost. Maybe a Guardian's class is based on how similar it that class is to the dead person's previous skills and/or employment. For example, maybe those who were soldiers or police officers become Titans, while those who were athletes or physically nimble become Hunters. Who knows.

After doing a lot of searching, I've been unable to verify any of the above comments. I haven't found any statement or publication by Bungie or D2's designers that describes the process of choosing a class, lore-wise. Perhaps they never thought that part through. Unfortunately, a lot of us gamers think of things that game designers don't take the time to consider, and thus we are left with unanswered questions.

If Bungie or another *official* source *did* say something regarding this, then hopefully someone will find it (or already has) and post their finding here. Until then, we are left with only our opinions and subjective observations, some of which are likely misinterpreted observations. The point is, unless the answer exists and I didn't find it, nobody truly knows how class is chosen.

The replies to your question above mainly seem to be nothing but opinion or subjective thoughts, really, despite being incorrectly written as empirically based proofs or statements of absolute, verifiable fact, which I find hilarious. It's funny how many people think their opinions are actual reality. "IMHO" rarely seems to be used any more, which is sad. It just goes to show how arrogant or opinionated people are becoming.

A lot of people write, for example, "Class is based on personality" or "It's not set in stone," or even "You do" (i.e., "you choose your class",) instead of the more polite, accurate and civilized "I personally think that..." or "In my opinion, ..." Not everyone can be correct, and yet everyone seems to think he or she IS the only correct one. What's wrong with people these days?

No offense intended, BTW. I just thought it was funny, that's all. Anyway, sorry I can't be more help. That's why I began my reply in a more polite and less self-important way. If anyone IS able to find an ACTUAL answer (not another opinion or conceited statement masquerading as fact) I'd *love* to hear it, though. Now I'm curious how class is chosen. xP
