After doing a lot of searching, I've been unable to verify any of the above comments. I haven't found any statement or publication by Bungie or D2's designers that describes the process of choosing a class, lore-wise. Perhaps they never thought that part through. Unfortunately, a lot of us gamers think of things that game designers don't take the time to consider, and thus we are left with unanswered questions.
If Bungie or another *official* source *did* say something regarding this, then hopefully someone will find it (or already has) and post their finding here. Until then, we are left with only our opinions and subjective observations, some of which are likely misinterpreted observations. The point is, unless the answer exists and I didn't find it, nobody truly knows how class is chosen.
The replies to your question above mainly seem to be nothing but opinion or subjective thoughts, really, despite being incorrectly written as empirically based proofs or statements of absolute, verifiable fact, which I find hilarious. It's funny how many people think their opinions are actual reality. "IMHO" rarely seems to be used any more, which is sad. It just goes to show how arrogant or opinionated people are becoming.
A lot of people write, for example, "Class is based on personality" or "It's not set in stone," or even "You do" (i.e., "you choose your class",) instead of the more polite, accurate and civilized "I personally think that..." or "In my opinion, ..." Not everyone can be correct, and yet everyone seems to think he or she IS the only correct one. What's wrong with people these days?
No offense intended, BTW. I just thought it was funny, that's all. Anyway, sorry I can't be more help. That's why I began my reply in a more polite and less self-important way. If anyone IS able to find an ACTUAL answer (not another opinion or conceited statement masquerading as fact) I'd *love* to hear it, though. Now I'm curious how class is chosen. xP
