People used this to boost themselves by getting rewards for a class, giving that equipment to the other character (which let that character have a higher power), do the same content to get even higher-powered equipment, and give that to the third character to do the same thing for even higher-powered equipment.
Very early on in Destiny 2's lifetime, Bungie removed this superboosting exploit by implementing the system as it is now, where big rewards can only be earned once per class each week, instead of once per character. So, unfortunately, it seems that Bungie intends specifically for this not to be in the game, since it used to be, and they pointedly removed it.
I'm not accusing you of trying to exploit or cheat or anything but that is literally the reason why it is what it is.
