The Forsaken story goes free to play in December, if you want a more linear experience. Being a New Light is awful rn.
As for who you are, you're a deathless revenant, chosen by a god-like being who might be an AI, or might actually be a god. Your job is to protect the last remnants of humanity: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xXDmX5rJC8E
The intro story mission is the New Light one, which is done in the Cosmodrome area. If you start that, you need to complete it (or it locks some progression).
Each new season has an intro mission. That mission starts automatically. The purpose of the mission is to give you the Seasonal Artifact (which is pretty important for your power level), it also teases the story.
The missions which follow the intro mission are only available to Season Pass holders. FTP player cannot continue those mission chains. For the most part, FTP players only get the basic bounties and basic playlists.
The mission on the frozen world (Europa) is the main Beyond Light campaign. The alien guy is Variks, who's the main quest giver for Europa. Everyone can do his basic bounties. Expansion owners can work with his expanded quest system (called Sabotage) and also with the Exo Stranger (who has more Stasis related quests).
The white haired woman is Mara Sov, the Queen of the Awoken (basically, the queen of the elves). The guy she imprisioned was Osiris ... except, it wasn't REALLY Osiris (who is a major friendly NPC), really it was Savathun, a Hive Queen (of lies), who was pretending to be Osiris to study humanity and guardians more closely.
Mara Sov is incredibly smart and is a long term planner. However, she has the critical flaw of Pride. She pretty much always thinks she's the only adult in the room. She's nominally an ally of humanity and of guardians, but ... she is playing her own game.
Savathun on the other hand pretty much always lies, but despite lying, she tends to treat everyone around her as equals.
S15 is about trying to help Mara Sov, who in turn is trying to help Savathun, but mostly to try to save her people, and disadvantage the Hive. This will end up backfiring on her (which we can tell from the Witch Queen trailers). The odds are pretty good Mara Sov will blame us for whatever happens.
I ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ hate the fact that thousands new players like Hera are told by veteran players to go
"YouTube" and watch the whole story just to understand what the ♥♥♥♥ is going on.
The story content could've been still here (just like in D1 since it never vaulted any content), but got vaulted away cuz...Reasons. I feel sorry for you Hera & new players.
Yeah I hate it too man , like vaulting content for the sake of memory in your pc are bs , I rather buy new hardrive for the game then losing the content that I paid for, like the whole point of me getting forsaken is the story , just like bungie previous game
Currently Bungie is pushing for the next DLC expansion: Witch Queen, so it's likely Beyond Light (Year 4) and Shadowkeep (Year 3) will be discounted, and Forsaken (Year 2) is probably quite cheap and will be free starting sometime in December.
The original story (Red War, Year 1) was vaulted, and the Forsaken story is soon to be vaulted (in February with the release of Witch Queen), hence why it will be free in a month and a half.
I would experience it a while before buying anything and see how you like it. Watching a couple (short) Destiny lore videos on YouTube may help fill in story gaps.
So i suggest they combine the games, the 'new light' experience could be in the Destiny 1 timeline, where you do what you did in Destiny 1, but the story is more....coherent, when it sends you into a strike for the final part of a story arc, it gives a mini-strike version for the sake of the story, minus the loot obviously.
As you go through the content, you unlock more stuff and when you complete the story content of destiny 1, you get this new destination, which is the destiny 2 timeline, where it utilises the red war story.
they can do so much with this, but they just don't do it, not sure why....
I think it's not gonna need that much fixes, at least they should fix if something is game breaking. Don't remember much patches before DCV to this activities.
