I never seen a chat message
Hello, So I'm something about 240 hours in the game and I've never seen a single chat message. I'm often seeing people typing or even using voice chat, and i'm always joined to those chats, but i never hear or see someone's message. It's like chat is blocked for me even though in the options I have everything enabled and it says i'm connected to local/teamfire chat. Played in 2020, radio silcence, played recently, radio silence. I play solo but it takes the solo to a whole new level. I've heard people having this issue for some time but i have this issue always and forever. Please help me resolve this, i would already made some in-game friends if I could interact with them.

Chat is bugged, has been for a while now. When its not bugged the chat is still pretty dead for most of the time. People dont use it or really need to use it.

Many times I've wished that text chat worked, but ya, it doesn't seem to much.

Chat is disabled by default, and even if you do turn it on, nobody else has. Everyone uses Discord, hell, even Bungie set up an official D2 channel.
Got to remember that this is a PC port of a console game that moved to Steam from Bnet... chat functions have been borked for forever.

Has Bungie ever responded why they can't address chat issue for this long?

I know Discord is the go to app for gaming.
But chat is an essential function of a multiplayer game that shouldn't be ignored.

Not officialy afaik, but I guess it is a chronic deficiency in the giving a f*ck department combined with an acute case of "everyone's using discord anyway, so why bother".

Almost no reason to use chat, most of the time when you see "play has joined chat" its because they want to yell at a team mate.

I get it that people use Discord, but every multiplayer game should have working chat. I'm talking about random players you meet and had fun with. That's how you always made friends in-game and THEN you invited them to app like Discord. Looks like I have to wait till they fix it some day. Thanks for explaining it.

If you look at the Gameplay > Text Chat settings, both Local and Team chats are set to MANUAL by default.

So unless they turn it on manually, most people's local and team chats are OFF, and they will not hear you even if yours is ON and you've typed something.

Why Bungie thinks it's a good idea to turn them off by default, is a great mystery. D2 is probably the only MMO with a community who does not communicate in-game.

The problem is even when it worked people never used it because it was opt-in by default meaning players had to either join it to use it.

I know this is an older thread but I came to ask the same thing. As an introvert and a casual player its scary to jump into voice with a group that may be full of elitist ♥♥♥♥♥. At least with chat I can at least ask a question or find someone else casual that wants to just play. IVe been on a few Discord D2 servers and as a casual its scary. People askin questions only to get torn apart and told they should "just know" I do ok but am well aware I can do better but am scared to death to ask. Be nice if there was a noob D2 server somewhere
