Is it possible to play this game with only 1 friend?
As I can see there are 3 people required to play, can I somehow change it to play with only 1 teammate?

You can play almost all the content with no friends, so yes having 1 friend is fine.

Bar the first bits of the main campagin, strikes some nightfall content forges and I guess pvp, you can do everything solo or in a party of two.

You cannot turn off matchmaking for modes that require 3 players or more.

Oh the question is can you play privately. No you can not as most content has match making.

you forgot that some contents, like nightfall have their "fireteam" version, which has no matchmaker, meaning he can do with his pal.

in theory you could do leviathan with just two players, but since the mechanics are contrived to force "coop" you really can't.

You actually can with a little script (completely safe as it doesn't touch game files in any way, it's just a router connection rule that can be toggle on/off)

But not officially, no, Bungie should give us the option to do that

Didn't I read lately that you can get banned for that?

Source?
I mean even if you could I don't think it's really detectable since it'd just return a connection error (but still put you in an activity trying to matchmake, except some activities like crucible the game has a cap on how long you can be in matchmaking before it just drops you in a new instance and has you waiting for others to join while you play)
