Destiny 2
Huge mess for new players
This game is a huge mess for new players, I'm sorry to say. I have never played destiny before, but I played many hours this weekend.

First of all. I'm starting a lvl 50, and everything is unlocked. What? I have no idea what's main quests, what's side quests, what's dungeons or anything. Cause the game doesn't tell me.. the first mission I took was a Strike mission, thinking it was one of the main missions. And I spend one hour dying over and over again, along with 2 other players. that was beyond frustrating..

I have no idea what I'm picking up as loot. I look in my inventory, and I have a lot of things, and not one of them tells me what it can be used for. I am dismantling things, and getting new things, That I don't know what is for.

I randomly stumbled upon the old campain misstion, and all of a sudden I was on a burning spaceship or something, and jumping around on mountains, following a bird.. It made absolutely no sense as to where I was with my character on earth..

What a mess of a game..

But the gunplay is fun, when you just run around the church and shooting random enemies :-)

Someone please tell me, what to do in this game. I just want simple small fun missions, where I can find some new weapons and things along the way.. Thank you.. I feel like I'm searching for the fun in this game. Where do I go?

Not only is it a mess, alot of systems, items and processes aren't properly explained. I've been playing for half a week now and I'm still in the dark on alot of things. The game needs a proper tutorial on items, crafting, upgrading, armor, etc etc.

This. SO MUCH this.

+1 yesterday night i saw that i can use some special items that i got from days ago in the slots of the armors!!!

also the weapons have slots too!!

Something the game never have had, not even in the old system. All they did take out is the semi useless levelgrind and throw it all at the player at once instead where as before the introductions got thrown in the exact same manner at the player once he reach level x. Giving you x levels to grind and figure out what it was that they threw at you before they throw you the next introduction mission.

So in other words the mess was always there, but not you get all the mess at the same with the result of new players being overwhelmed by it.

But I agree the introduction quests should be reworked completely to be decent tutorials and also they should be extended to cover other mechanics like fusing your gear and modules you can install on some.
Agreed, as a new player, the onboarding is atrocious - the game assumes you're a long-time player and immediately throws you in Endgame with ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ crazy amount of content and absolutely no explanation, save for "Press Space to Jump" and "Click to Shoot".

I would suggest a prompt upon creating a new character, asking whether the player wishes to be thrown in Endgame as it is now, or follow the main story (Red War) for a smoother introduction to the game story and mechanics.

The main issue I have really is just how unorganised the quest log is... no indication of what is supposed to be a tutorial quest a side from it saying "Introduction" but they seem to be more advanced features in the game that a new player wouldn't reach yet.

Yes, the communication to the player is extremely bad.. I don't think I have ever played a game that does it THIS bad... Even dark souls has some kind of direction to where to go.
I think it's a big fail on Bungie's part that they made the level boost indiscriminate... What they should have done is, when a player starts the game without any existing guardians, they should have started the Red War campaign and the user would be able to opt out of campaign by selecting a menu option.

Howeve it would still be pretty bad because there would be no sense of progression while leveling through campaign. I really think it was great playing from level 1 and unlocking all the perks via forest missions.

Honestly, this whole ordeal with getting to the fresh content is not worth it. There is not much of the fresh content honestly. New players are better off playing old content because there is so much of it comparing to the new content. The new content exists mostly in the end game loop which is not everybody's cup of tea in the first place so making it the main feature of this game is not that good idea.

Maybe they should have maintained the 1-50 level progression for new players, but added a method for the vets to invite new players, such invitation would provide level boost. that way, new players would get proper campaign experience with an option to skip it if they wanted to get straight to new content.
Because, it's not possible to guide you through, a lot of different combinations, with absolutely different approaches, for example I'm heavy using "Wormhusk Crown", so I get partial health refill when dodging, so when during battle rush I get extremely low health, I'm dodging. Or another armor, which giving you ability doing 2 dodges, when you combine with different subclass it will give you hiding when dodging. How you can guide through such things?
Think of the game as more of a MetroidVania/Souls game. You've just awoken in a world that's completely alien to you, you're told it's up to you to save the universe. Go and explore, place map markers & see where you end up. You start at 750 Power so no activity is off limits to you, setting foot on mars required 300 Power (you'd need to play 20 hours or so before you could even go there), your level grind has been removed so you can get straight to the weapon grind, go get your Sleeper Simulant, Whisper of the Worm, The Last Word, Rat King, MIDA Multi-Tool, Polaris Lance, Deathbringer, etc... Take Quests, do bounties, play in the Crucible/Gambit, just explore, enjoy the lore & have fun :)

FOllow the massive spam of tutorials you get.
You are told to open your inventory, press A to get to your quests.
From here you can hover your mouse on top of different quests which tell you if they are part of the main or not.

On top of that, they blatantly tell you when you start what icon means what.
In some places you will see that, in top right coner, blinking ghost icon, you may thought that it is saving, but it is not, it actualy pin-pointing, point of interest, open nav mode (tab by default), and your shell ghost will look at exactly that place which you need to interact with.
Another thing is to look closely to the arrow in the radar, it will show you the direction to your qest step.

It's something you get used to after a while, you'll seriously feel like you've earned every weapon you have though.
As a veteran player, with thousands of hours across both Destiny 1 and Destiny 2; I must admit that you're completely right. Every time I get a friend to start playing, I find myself having to teach them how to play despite there being a "tutorial" opening mission. This game is massive and intimidating, and learning all the mechanics can a very daunting experience. (It's really similar to Warframe, in that way.)

So my recommendation is to try to find a veteran player to group up with on the regular, that you can get to help with missions and answer questions / give advice. That way you can learn everything overtime, rather than trying to figure it all out at once when it gets dumped on you.

I really hope Bungie fixes the opening to better funnel new players through the campaign missions. I understand that they worry that new players won't enjoy the Red War, Curse of Osiris, and Warmind campaigns (because they weren't received very well by the core community), but they did do a good job of easing players into the mechanics of the game.
- Do campaigns first imo, it'll sink you into the "world", have a taste of which factions there are, enemies weakness, area/planets caracteristics etc.

- Then the mid-end-game will start with "Activities" you find on planets (such as Public Events happening randomly here and there, or Lost Sectors which are hidden dungeons, or Patrols beacons a.k.a little and easy fetch missions).

- Hm you also can grab "Bounties" at various NPCs on hub/planets, these are littles challenge that comes weekly or daily. You'll come to know which are worth to you and which are pain, it depends your playstyle.

- lastly, there are Strikes (medium dungeons, matchmakable), Nightfall (big dungeons) and Raids (if you have enough friends), and other situationnal modes and missions for hardcore

My best advice : add some vet or vet friend to give you a tour of the game (implying he doesn't confuses you even more).
I feel like this would also work as a review.
Whether it is recommended or not is up to you.
