How the hell do you fly a helicopter properly?

also a good banking technique would be to tilt the heli using the mouse and hold S to complete a full fly around circle whilst having good control with the mouse still.

Practice practice practice. I've been flying heli's in the game since ArmA 1 back in 2006ish. By no means am I great pilot, but I can' fly sufficiently to get to where I need to be. I was terrible until once I just laid out about 12 little birds, set them all as playable, and just went for a cruise around Sahrani. After doing that a few times I eventually got the hang of it.

Also, disregard half the posters here. I love the series and have been playing since I got OFP on a demo disc around 12 or so years ago, but the community is both the strongest and weakest point of the series. A lot of awesome content creators, and also a lot of armchair generals who have such an ego and elitist attitude that they put Kanye West and Bono to shame.

Heres a tip, play ArmA 2, do the helicopter tutorial, apply real thought to it. FLying a helicopter is easy, you simply refuse to change what you are doing and somehow expect different results. ITs one of the most rewarding experiences arma has to offer.

As someone else said, go in the editor and just start flying around. I find good practice is to fly as fast and low as possible, following the contours of the ground. For landing, I'll usually do a slow pass, pick a spot that looks challenging to land at, circle around and try to land at the exact spot without stopping on approach.

Map a joystick if your using a PC. Flight controls respond perfectly to joystick control. Hard to fly a helo without a joystick.

If you don't have a joystick then don't even bother. I recommend the logitech extreme 3D pro. Great starter joystick for about 30 bucks.

You don't need a joystick or controller, the keyboard and mouse is fine. It just takes practice, and if you are still no good, you just need more practice. Here's some tips:

1) Use external view, it's easier at first.

2) Rebind the keys to your liking. I left them as default but I did put the height up and down on the side buttons on my mouse. This is important because you always need to have your fingers on WASD to control the chopper, so you really need to control the height with your right hand.

3) Don't be gentle with it, you can throw it around all you want. X and C only work at low speed, just like in real life, and it's the same with jets too. So if you are flying fast then you need to do a high speed pass shooting rockets and try your best, bank a bit to correct direction. But ideally, just pull all the way back until you are aiming straight up. This will bring you to a halt very quickly, then just put the nose back down, and bingo, you are stopped. Now you can use X and C to rotate around and face any way you want. When you have missiles, make use of them first. Stay far away from your target, hover over a hill, press TAB to have the gunner find a target, and shoot the missiles. They will kill stuff miles away and you aren't at risk. If any missiles come at you, quickly duck down behind the hill. Then pop back up and repeat until all the missiles are gone.

A glance lasting all of about two seconds at any forum talking about ArmA 3 (including this one) would show you that almost everyone is experiencing less than ideal framerates.

creepingdeath, i can actually fly helis pretty well, i learned it just practicing. open the editor and create a single heli and fly a while (sorry foy my english, i hope you can understand what im trying to say)
