First of all... you're a "little" late since this happened well over half a year ago. Second, it wasn't that much of a surprise for most people involved. I quote a random post I found: "It was generally becoming a relic of the past, with most mods having their own threads on the updated Bohemia forums with links and updates coming there, along with many mods opting for Steam Workshop as well, largely making Armaholic redundant and a relic of a bygone era.", see this link for more on that:
https://www.reddit.com/r/arma/comments/nndk7d/what_happened_to_armaholic/
And why would you ask random people to upload mods which aren't theirs to give away in the first place? Sounds like a horrible idea, leave that part up to the actual mod owner and/or developer(s) please...
While it may not "have been surprising for anyone" there has been damage. That is, many mods for Arma 2 in particular have been lost, and i'm talking of great amounts. Gigabytes, even terabytes of data.
It would be an utter shame not to archive them. almost ALL of the BI forum threads point to dead armaholic links, not to mention the absence of Workshop functionality for that game.
I wouldn't rely on mod authors to upload the files. Most have long moved on and are now impossible to contact. Reuploading a mod certainly is not a crime, in these circumstances.

It's not as tightly married to Steam, and it's, to my knowledge, completely free from Tencent influence.
In other words:
Arma 2 is overall more robust and still a good game, which is still fun to play, when you decide to play it.
Thanks to Gunter Severloh, I got my hands on WWII mods for old OFP, but I do not possess the links he shared any longer. Perhaps you can find them, it was here on the Discussions, though I suspect it would be in the OFP section instead.
However, even those two... They are no longer relevant, with ACE3 surpassing the predecessors, and WWII mods containing a much larger amount of content than before from virtually every theatre of war (even the Sino-Japanese war now!) and as such, their purpose now is purely nostalgic anyway.
