I thought that ran off of four double-As.
Take time to read this link about the info air missiles info.
If you close at enemy air plane use the bim-9x ,,, look at the info about cone (degrees) how missiles react.

And key T for direct lock at front of you and key R to cycle more targets ( see rader what you lock on that point)
its pretty simple
STEP 1 open your rader - check the options menu on how
STEP 2 when you see a white marker thats an enemy - press R not T, R to target
STEP 3 wait for a lock
STEP 4 fire and forget
Try getting some distance around 2km and see if you can a proper lock.
The above user Ken (and whoever else said the same thing) is correct about the range, 2km is about minimum to use them at properly. Although I randomly use them close sometimes if not paying much attention... you can get kills with them out to around 8 km or so.
