I mean in the end you can always reset the points and try something else
Been using one on my int-stacked rapier. A regular rapier with more damage I could do 470 damage on a charged hit, but with a 30% lightning gem another one could do over 600 total damage.
So the way you do the paladin build is by going Focus/Con, majority into focus and then putting the Amber gem into your weapon. This takes a percentage of damage caused by your str based weapon and makes it come from Focus instead. This leaves your heals big and the weapon damage nice. This is most commonly done with Warhammer or Sword and Board.
EDIT: Amber is the nature/focus gem. So regardless of Strength or Intelligence or Dex based weaponry. If you slot the Amber gem into the weapon the weapon will now scale off of the primary stat and Focus. You will see two damage numbers on screen when you hit something. You should put all into focus until you hit 150 due to the 20% to healing at 150. Then you can branch out if you need.
Also, if you purchase faction gear and use the Seal of Cleric at the appropriate work table (i.e. forge for plate armor, outfitter for rest) and the seal it will change the stats to Focus/Con. This allows you to put all the points into focus while still maintaining some CON for health.
The thing they are deliberately failing to tell you, is that you only get a small amount of that damage converted at early levels. (10-20%) And even with a max level gem which you likely can't get your hand on yet, it's only 50% damage conversion. In other words it "helps" your damage, but by NO MEANS gets you full damage on weapons.
