Yes and no. Yes, because there are no official servers hosted directly through the game. No, because there have been community works to get mulitplayer back up and running.

Usually there are people online. Also, you can use services such as GameRanger to get online. If you're just looking to play with friends, LAN functionality is still up so if you use things like Hamachi, those will work as well.

As a third option, if somebody hosts you can directly input their IP so you can connect.

Also keep in mind that there is a small ( and i mean small ) chance that official servers could be brought back like they did for BF2, only time will tell.

So far,the most crowded server that I've seen had 3 players.

Every day since launch I've had a game with 10 people in one server at around 8pm gmt/3est. There's been more or less in servers throughout the evening though and a few players in other servers.

If you look at the front page of swbfgamers.com you can see current numbers without going in game. Currently 5 on bf1.

And keep in mind these are just the people using SWBFGamers's service. factor in things like GameRanger and that number goes up.
