Given that Sega is relaunching old games, they are more likely to create a remake of the original Phantasy Star (1987).

Didn't they already do that with the Sega Ages collection?

As much as I wish I fear they'll change stuff not needed.

Or even nerf some stuff like removing blood (because oh boy, PSO looked more violent than even PSU).

It was quite the cheap remake (like any Ages 2500 game on the PS2 unfortunately) and while I wished we could get a modernized version of the original tetralogy I feel that actually it's not bad that Sega didn't touch these classics because they would ruin some stuff like being able to revive Nei in the PS2 remake.

Fans did good romhacks of the classics.
I meant something the current FF7 remake. Phantasy Star (1987) with modern graphics, modern combat system, updated story...but that might be too much to ask for Sega.

The SEGA Ages PS1 remake is very good for its low cost stuff, not so much the PS2 one, as for the PSO1 remake, the modding scene is strong on that one so better leave as is.

Personally I'd rather want to see the HD2D treatment for Phantasy Star (maybe IV) as it would respect the original feeling of the game with a modern coat of paint.

FF VII Remake is actually an in-universe reboot/sequel than a true remake with Nomura adding fan-fic stuff in it...

PS: Sega would never be able to give the same level of detail and quality as FFVII R anyway. And making it button mashy PSO2/NGS combat would ruin the spirit imo.

Maybe I guess? I am glad with the Switch Sega Ages one. I'm less fan of the design of the PS2 remake.

Modding is there but not as strong as adding new areas and monsters sadly.

At the same time Etrian Odyssey series, Valkyria Chronicles series, Shining Series, Shin Megami Tensei universe(which include Persona series), and Yakuza universe are Sega IPs.

The thing is that all of these are second or third party series:

- Etrian Odyssey and SMT/Persona are Atlus
- Yakuza is by the Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio
- Valkryia is Sega Wow.

As well as being fairly niche for half of them. Dungeon crawling is not what most plays.

Yakuza and Persona are popular but then again they're made by third parties.

I believe that Sega's inner teams (like Sonic Team and the staff behind PSO2) couldn't produce a quality game.

Finally: none of these series could reach the level of Final Fantasy.

Then why do so many users insist here that PSU and PSO1 were the most popular JRPG of their era.

Cuz the Final Fantasy on the Gamecube ... ... actually, I liked that one, too

Some people like to pretend that the games they like are universal and popular for a sense of social security. It's easy to lose a wider perspective when you surround yourself with people who like that same game.

Phantasy Star Online brought online gaming to a wider scale with a fully fledged game instead of being either a tech demo like Chu Chu Rocket or too complicated to get into like Dragon's Dream on the Saturn. I cannot tell for PSU as it's a post-Dreamcast death era game.

But today's Sega could never produce something as qualitative.

Anyway, FF was more turn based/standard JRPG while Phantasy Star Online and Universe are more akin to dungeon crawlers like Diablo.

When majority of elder MMORPG gamers think of early 2000s anime MMORPG, they think of Ragnarok Online 1, rather than Final Fantasy 11.

To this day Raganarok Online 1 still has thousand of players in the official server and thousands more in unofficial servers, browser, and mobile spinoffs.

I'd also add that the Dreamcast made it easier to go online than the PS2, for the later it's an afterthought requiring a special disc as well as having to buy a peripheral while it was built-in for the former.

I know that Ultima Online and other pre-WoW MMOs existed.

And technically speaking PSO isn't an MMO (even PSO2 was not one per se). The Sonic Team explicitly told that they got inspired by dungeon crawlers and hack n slash like Diablo to make the game in instanced dungeons instead of a proper persistent world.

And yes, PSO1 was quite popular, especially when it got ported to the Gamecube and later Xbox and PC.

I didn't even play PSO online until Blue Burst came out, ALL my time was well spent with family
