As for base PSO well not the same combat system than ngs but more content. Overall as ngs is now i prefer base PSO2 (i'll see with future update if i change my mind).
And Final Fantasy doesn't have CASTs.
In regards to the actual title: I don't care for how FF14 plays. It's just like WoW where you sit there and spam. It's a bit more interactive than WoW but I just don't care for how it plays.
PSO2 was good but it's dated. The story is cliche and kind of... weird. Watch some gameplay of PSO2 if you really want to decide. If you like how WoW plays but with FF designs then sure give FF14 a try.
And the game is super grindy and I'm too busy these days.
And it being a decade old already doesn't help. If NGS wasn't keeping PSO2 alive I'd probably be mostly done with it too.
I'm not great at executing blocks, parry's or dodges but I can surely do it 6/10 and it's more satisfying for me, that's why I'm hurting so bad New world and Ashes of creation kinda leans more the combat of FF14 or WoW cuz aside from the combat everything is really great in these two.
I have played PSO2 SEA but I left long before the update with Yamato in the trailer dropped, I'm now playing DS Fighter in NGS only and the dings on blocks reminds me of swordmaster in Blade and soul which a game I really love if only I have better ping playing it since you lose so much DPS from the lag.
Besides, I looked into it and FFXIV doesn't have Selkies.
People say the combat is boring in FFXIV, but I think the beauty of the combat system is trying to min-max your uptime and hitting the boss until the very last moment/server tick, before moving out of the attack, and immediately moving back in. The later content gets pretty intense, especially in Ultimate Coil of Bahamut and The Epic of Alexander, where a single mistake typically punishes the entire group, but you can't play safe because you're on a strict timer before a wipe. Basically, FFXIV is a lot more pseudo action combat than people might think it is.
PSO2/NGS has nice boss fights that just teach you how to counter or evade properly, I can't really say much more on it because pretty much everything can be done solo easily enough.
If we're talking about PSO2 fights, such as Falz Hunar, Omega Falz Angel, Phaleg, Sodam, heck, any of the EQ bosses, then yeah, combat is actually really fun. As of right now, NGS doesn't really have anything like that outside of Bujin, because Nogleth is also subject to repeating AI/pattern.
I would recommend playing base PSO2 to kill time until the next NGS update release. Then maybe hitting PSO2 again once you're done with the new update.
I joined PSO2 very late, about January of 2021, but fell in love with it. I dumped near 100 hours into character customization and spent many hours talking to friends. Making experiences with alliance members and the social aspect was incredibly refreshing from single player games. The unique bosses I hadn't seen ever before were exciting and kept me playing just to fight them. The OST is, personally, the best I've heard from any game soundtrack.
The combat system was fun to explore and getting good at classes made it even more fun. Scion classes were especially fun to play. I don't remember how many hours I put into Divide Quests but they were some of my best times. Cradle of Darkness took up a lot of time too but even the meseta grind was well worth it. Remembering the hype I had to buy the Lightweave Klauz Tail camo and the amount of valuables I sold to go from broke to 150 million, it's a very fond memory.
I chose PSO2 because I got addicted to the combat, the bosses, the social aspect and the amount of things to do. I wish I was new to PSO2 again just to relive the memories I have now.
NGS is okay too.
