Wiki still a must for calamity and vanilla?
I never played calamity and haven't touched vanilla since it first released. I think a lot has changed. From old plays and old videos it used to be that i had a wiki open for everything. Playing on steam deck now (no pc) it sucks to navigate a wiki on my phone.

Was anything ever implemented to guide through the various drop, farming which materials, recipes, spawning bosses in which order etc..? Or are there mods i can add on that would help? Like a quest book system like they had in minecraft maybe?

Vanilla Terraria = Can be played with Mouse/Keyboard or with a Gamepad Controller.

tModLoader = Not made for Gamepad Controller, coz majority of mods never consider gamepad.

These informational mods will help you track recipes, boss to kill and convenient access to wiki using a hotkey. If you use Mouse and Keyboard.

Calamity and even vanilla Terraria has tons of contents, for me Wiki is a must if i wanted to do an efficient farming.

If efficiency is not your concern you can play blind for both.

There a reason you spawn with the GUIDE NPC. He give insight about what to do for progress.

And for EVERY item that have "material" displayed you can show him the items and he tell you every recipes that use it.

Thanks for all that detail. Would you say controller with these mods is just clunky or pull your hair out impossible?

I pnayed a ton of dyson sphere program which really requires a lot of mouse but the track pad on deck was usable. Not great but i got used to it.

you can still use your Steam Deck builtin controller/external gamepad in tModLoader:
+when making a house,
+when setting up your own boss arena,
+making a layout of a farm,
+fishing (or use the "Autofish" mod by Cyrilly )
+ or when making a "hellvator" or any digging/mining.

basically all vanilla interactions.

use mouse and keyboard when interacting with mods UI coz most (or all) mods custom UI/windows doesn't support gamepad controllers,

and when comes to fighting a boss its up to you.

Calamity has a lots of custom UI/windows, and maybe when fighting a boss, a mouse and keyboard are more precise when dodging and and moving around, it goes crazy in Calamity and its addons, a bullet hell.

Finally pulled the trigger and installed it all. Frustrating but still enjoyable despite deck controls. Thanks again!

You don't need wiki or guides for vanilla terraria, just use the in-game guide npc a lot and explore a lot. A lot of things happen naturally that push you along the game path. Sure you might not discover every little secret but that's par for the course of playing games the right way. (on first time)
But it's mostly plopping a new item into the guide and seeing an interesting item, like what's that you make with pumpkins?

As a new player myself, I'd agree you don't NEED the wiki. However, I found myself lost, believe the wrong things about how mechanics work, not knowing how Minion and Sentry slots work, and not knowing what types of items I can even craft or what I should go for. I didn't understand the mechanics of events like the Blood Moon or how every third heart destroyed would summon the brain I was supposed to fight.

All things considered, I'd heavily recommend the wiki to a new player unless they're ABSOLUTELY ADAMANT about trying to figure out everything for themselves.
