Pick Jackie, build lifesteal, 1 vs 1 anyone you see, you will win most non-teamfights.

what weapon do you recommend?

You could be missing Weapon Mastery.

Weapon Mastery gives you a percentage increase to your damage based on what weapon you're using at the time(each weapon giving different amounts of attack damage and skill damage).

But unlike your normal Level, this mainly goes up as you deal damage to targets(crafting weapons does increase it but trying to craft weapons on mass probably isn't worth the time). So you can get to say level 15 by just moving around the map and crafting items but if you've only fought two chickens for the leather you need your Weapon Mastery is still back at like 2-4.

And other people have gotten their Defense Masteries as well, by taking damage(and crafting armor but again mass crafting probably isn't worth it). So being several levels behind means your damage is low, and then gets lower due to their higher defenses.

Now I've rarely had problems with these masteries not being at or around my level but depending on how you play the game, I don't know just guessing here, if you aren't taking fights or hunting animals as much as you should, you're falling behind the stat spread.

Avoiding other players till you get a gold can be worth it but once your base build is done you should be looking to hunt animals such as dogs, boars and wolves; depending on character you can even take bears by yourself but going into day two you should be looking to fight over [Insert resource] or farm animals while getting your non rare resources together... and food.

You do get raw stats(Attack and defense) as you level but the Mastery system gives a percentage bonus to said numbers which by mid game and late game make for a massive difference if you're really behind. I believe it used to be far more drastic but it's still important. A team that kills two other teams for tree is going to have not only tree on one player but a 1-2 mastery advantage, not to mention character level too. That can be a big difference if your own team has kinda been hiding in dock not killing animals.

Again I don't know how you play. Just going on the assumption that your numbers are low because you aren't taking fights or killing animals.

The key thing to remember is that you always want to be trying to do something; fighting animals, taking team fights, restoring your HP and healing items, making your way to the next objective to contest, heading for a shop, or avoiding danger and taking an animal filled zone. But sitting there either avoiding the game or wasting time debating on just WHAT to do will put you behind; either in items, levels or masteries.

Again I'm not the best player but my Mastery rarely gets like 2 levels behind my current character level and if it does it's usually because I'm playing a character that doesn't kill animals fast, I got distracted with another objective like making a ton of food, or I keep getting sent to the 'time out zone' while my team manages to live. So long as you try to keep on top of animal farming, your mastery gain should stay at a reasonable level.

Here's a link to the wiki talking about the systems, there's 5 in total but only three of them are really noticable and the big two are Weapon and Armor.

The biggest rule i usually follow myself in playing anyone is to be always doing "something". Doing anything builds some mastery of sorts, that in turn builds your stats. Even if its just killing the lowest level chickens that are in your path, its SOMETHING. Search any unchecked crate in your path, gather/build food/cameras, activate terminals, farm animals, etc. Even just crossing to a new zone gets you movement mastery.

A minute wasted doing basically nothing will impact you in the long run, especially if done repeatedly.

For this topic particularly, farming whatever is in your path is mandatory to keep up in dmg. The more higher level the animal, the better. Pulling a cheeky kill steal even nets some great stats.
