i remember some hammer thing that you could change weapons in a match? Is there a way to pick or is it randomized what weapon you get?

no. each character has 1 or more weapon type choices that they start with and equip on the island. you can craft/loot/change into better weapons as long as the character can equip and use it.

example:

Jenny can only use the pistol weapon type. she can equip any weapon that is a pistol.

Aya can use the pistol, the assault rifle and the sniper rifle weapon types. she can equip any weapon of the three. however you stay with 1 weapon type in a match because of weapon mastery scaling. (you get increase stats from using 1 weapon type)
