No difference.

Race doesn't matter they just give you a boost for the beginning.

Considering they only boost Skills, I assume there's ''best'' picks regardless of your preference in Might/Finess/Sorcery.

Looking in the manual, the Almain get +1 to Alchemy, +2 to Blacksmithing, and +1 to Persuasion so they are the best pick. All of those are good to have.

The best are the Varani or Dokkalfar, as they are the only ones who can access the blessing of death aka patron Belen which gives crit chance and crit hit.
In general, Varani has a somewhat stronger start than the other races, IMO, since you can grab the 2nd level of Detect Hidden right after getting out of the tower.

Having the extra loot from all those hidden chests right off the bat is a much more significant/immediate benefit than, say, +2 Blacksmithing (seriously, just how useful do you think that 3rd component is going to be as soon as you get to the first village?).

Its future investment. Almain's 4 skills are all useful to have. The other 3 races have 2 ''useless'' skill picks that you essentially dont need any points in at all, or for most of the game.

Alchemy and Persuasion are both great from the start, and so is Blacksmithing 1.

Don't forget their different god choices between races.

You can easily get 3 points + the Blacksmithing trainer at Shieldring Keep by the time you're ready to do your first round of serious blacksmithing using stuff at Didenhill/Shieldring, though.

And early rank 2 Detect Hidden can also be considered a future investment, especially in terms of gem shards (seriously, if you're wanting to find more gem shards, level 2 Detect Hidden makes a much bigger difference than Sagecrafting).

Well, if you're doing Sorcery, Varani has access to Vraekor (+6% fire damage/resistance), which is good enough.

Honestly, the starter god bonuses are so small that I wouldn't consider them a significant factor.

I took Almain. There is a persuasion attempt in the tower and another shortly after, feels nice to get those. The compass from the special deliveries chest gives you extra for +2 free. Alchemy immediately gives you Unstable Potions, AKA money. I chose the 10% extra health god because it scales and as a mage my health is low.

Yes, but since you want to max Blacksmithing anyway those extra points never lose their relevance. The point is Almain gets 4 Skill Points that are always relevant. The other 3 gets x2 Skill Points you might not ever want. So technically if you never need Lockpicking, Dispelling or Stealth, you will always be 2 levels of Skill Points behind.

In that sense Almain is a clear first pick for general builds. If you do plan on using Lockpicking, Dispelling or Stealth in a build, then those choices become okay alternatives.

I picked one of the elves because they look better, but Almain is certainly the best choice for min/maxing.

The disenchant skill is important to get rid of the cursed containers and to free people from enchantments. Makes the building bridges quest chain much easier to solve, if you put 4 points in it. With that you do not need to fight the brain washed Fae.

It's an essential skill for a mage build in my oppinion. So I prefer that starting char as a mage, that has the skill.

Disenchanting people is a good argument. I forgot about that one. For cursed containers I forget if any skill level into it is actually needed. Early on it isnt.

Feel free to pick race by visuals.
Gear and passives completely dwarf patron bonuses.
And racial skills become less and less relevant with time as well. Besides, with all the books and teachers you'll soon be swimming in skills and will eventually max them all out anyway.

Speaking of which, note a certain quirk of the system – permanent skill points are not re-allocatable, so take care not to read a skillbook for a skill your race has at level 2 before you've gone through both of it's basic trainers.

You can allocate SP above basic, and still get late basic trainer's sp by resetting, but if you stack 2 points from racial + 1 point from book + 1 point from one basic trainer you get stuck with a permanent minimum of 4, and the other basic trainer's skill point will be lost to you forever.
