I'm thinking the only commonality is a massive logjam of players.

No. In their Early Access information on the store page it says the release version will have offline mode.

You know its sad when you can't even play a single player game offline. I'm not sure when this stupid trend started, but its really stupid what devs/companies are doing.

I still don't really understand. Are we required to start an online game with more than two people, or can we start an online game with just ourselves and allow random people to join?

Companies are doing this to promote "live services", and they also do this to prevent "piracy".

I would only assume the early access is online only to farm player data to help develop the game?

I read that in Jim Sterling's voice.

In Torchlight 3's case don't forget this wasn't originally going to be a singleplayer RPG game; they were originally making an online game without singleplayer. So its no surprise to me that the early version is still built around that concept. So long as they enable offline mode and don't tie it to things like in-game unlocks and achievements (Starcraft 2 does this - you can play offline, but you can't win any achievements, experience etc...)

I was just going to ask about this.
Disappointed to learn you can't play offline in the early access phase.
I also worry that the offline mode will be not as fully featured as the online mode in teh full release. They have that battle pass thing that you unlock stuff with and that's probbaly online only. It probably won't have lan support either so when they shut down the servers good bye Torchlight 3 multiplayer.
I miss the days when we owned our games and not the devs/publishers...

You could just read the store page and youd of known single player is slated for final release.

"The full version will also contain the ability to play the game in Single Player mode, which will not require an internet connection.”

That was taken out of the early access part on the store page.

Then I rather they divide the offline and online data better..

They are...the moment the game exits EA...which is not supposed to be that far away based on their announcements.
