The gatherer picks up commodities within it's range (but you have to put wood in yourself, to fuel it). It starts with only 1 tile range, but this increases with upgrades, I think.
The auto miner "hits" all trees and iron deposits , it starts with a 1 tile range. Upgrading it once improves this to 3 tiles range.
That's as far as I know , only saw a bit of the game on twitch , don't have the game myself.
I saw a fan spinning when I placed wood in the auto-gatherer, must have not noticed it picking up nearby resources, that's interesting that they both gather/collect both resources though.
I thought it was only wood for the gatherer and iron for the miner.
The auto gatherer will collect resources lying in its radius, as can be seen by the voxels flying towards it.
If you add an efficiency booster to this combo and upgrade the auto-miner and gatherer to level 3, your train will basically destroy EVERYTHING left and right of it, but unfortunately not necessarily in front of it.
And as someone stated before me, neither of those wagons will do anything unless they are fed with wood/iron. This does get less annoying with upgrades tho, as the max number of fuel resources that can be stacked into it increases.
