Now that was a puzzle!

Very confusing at first, but it was cool when I got it!

This one was fun. This one made me think a lot more than your previous chambers, so that's a plus in your favor :D The first and last rooms required some thinking...more than usual for me. The second room was about speed. BTW I killed the turrets with my own hands using the laser cube...just couldn't stand seeing those things alive longer than they deserve to be >:D .

BTW I love how you made that DNA strand using portal elements...GENIUS! You must've spent some time trying to figure that out, and it pays off in the end...well, for eye candy anyway. Overall great job on this!

I found the middle room interesting. Other than that, I see you love your continued use of symbols and confusing players.

Try my map?

VERY CLEVER & FUN
nicklonium  [author] Sep 1, 2013 @ 1:25pm
The portal bumping under the fizzlers issue has now been fixed and the laser receiver in the first room should now be much harder to reach by tilting the laser cube. Although if Valve ever gets around to fixing the grating glitch, I will need to make a few changes to that first room. Thanks again, all this feedback is great.

Very buggy, but I love it! :P
I like the gel bubbles ...looks awesome. ^^

I make a video with the bugs for you. Give me just a few minutes.

Here it is...

A new favorite. Great puzzles. Very challenging but a lot of fun to solve. I'm not a fan of timing puzzles but these weren't so short they couldn't be accomplished after you figure them out. I liked the elevator style delivery system in the first chamber. The suspended blobs were a sight to behold. Nice touch. Good use of the angled pane for two elements. Watch out for those erratic lasers. Fantastic map. Thanks. See ya round the workshop .

Great puzzles... I really felt they were challenging. I had not seen the very top laser receiver trick in the first room before- took a few times to figure it out.

Samas: I design, test and play muted so the music matching up with anything is a surprising coincidence. I'll have to go back in and see what you mean.

Dieza: I take a great deal of pride in saying all of my chambers are created in the basic PTI editor with no mods or additional tools (although in this chamber I adopt a nifty little glitch in the basic editor I learnt from the user nejoow to place the observation rooms in the floor). I've played a handful of hammer chambers and I find they tend to break the basic rules of portal too often for my liking, they're very creative and take a lot of time but, for me, they're never as impressive as an intricately thought through or well crafted chamber from the basic editor. Thanks for playing, I'm pleased you enjoyed it.
TheMadBastard™ Aug 16, 2013 @ 10:56am
Fantastic. I spent a good 20 minutes trying to do this, but once I realized how it was supposed to be done, it was a very enjoyable challenge. Very well designed and, tell me, you did create this (and I suppose most or all of the other "Elementary" maps) with HAMMER or other map editor of the same kind? This is not something I think you could build in the in-game map creator. Anyway, fantastic map and thanks very much for your opinion on my first one, I hope I'll keep doing more, but I doubt I'll ever manage to make one as challenging or as original as this one.

I've worked with a HAMMER-like program once for this very purpose, but it was too difficult to use for the little time I had to learn it.

Hey there again, so I liked this chamber more than Hidrogen, the first room is the best in my opinion, great use of the sequence on turning off stuff. I also enjoyed the overall concept of the chamber, the music with those particles in the second room really combine, it's kind of smooth fizzy.

See ya []

Good Chamber, but quite hard for me.
kwyjibo 1981 Jul 18, 2013 @ 7:30pm
I apologize. I did not realize that my settings were like that. It's no longer private.

Maybe that's why nobody has commented on my puzzle.
nicklonium  [author] Jul 18, 2013 @ 2:10pm
Thanks, that looked too fluid for a first playthrough but it definitely showed me a couple of things that need fixing. I had a feeling that classic grating glitch would come back to haunt me in the first room but, apart from a minor issue in the last room, everything else worked perfectly. Thanks for recording your run as well, I've always found that sort of feedback the most beneficial.

Excellent work in this chamber, very challenging, i took a lot of time in the first room, my walkthrough: http://youtu.be/Neoxwaf_x9I

I shall try It & may come up with a trippy one :D thanks for responce.

HighTide, I will admit that this one isn't the easiest of my chambers but it's certainly possible. Have you tried combining some of the items you mentioned into (without giving away the puzzle) something a bit different and original? Sleep on it, metaphorically speaking, the brain performs problem solving back flips during sleep cycles. I'm happy to help if you're still stuck, just explain where you've got up to in spoiler tags and I'll see if I can drop a few hints.

Glad you enjoyed it Munchy, I've been told Sulphur is quite challenging too if you're after a tricky one.
Mega Munchy Jul 16, 2013 @ 1:16pm
Very challenging to solve & exelent job here.
HighTide Jul 16, 2013 @ 11:42am
I give up. After spending about an hour in the first room, I see no possible way to finish it. I just give up. I have had the turrets still shoot at me, even in a glass box, have tried getting lasers, tractor beams and the aerial faith plater to help, but nothing seems to be able to get that little companion cube out of the box. If anyone knows how, please tell me. I am about ready to murder every turret in that map.
nicklonium  [author] Jul 15, 2013 @ 11:02am
Sure, I'll happily check out your chambers, at the moment I can't see your workshop because your profile/workshop is set to private.
kwyjibo 1981 Jul 13, 2013 @ 1:36pm
I really like this puzzle. I plan on playing all the elements puzzles that you published. Perhaps you wouldn't mind checking my puzzle out and giving me some feedback. It's my first one.
nicklonium  [author] Jul 13, 2013 @ 2:55am
That's quite the compliment, thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed it. Unfortunately, that's a tricky thing to fix without breaking the last room or adding a long dull, featureless corridor back to the first room. The best I can really hope for is that the player realises they need 3 cubes and that each of those cubes is critical to opening each door. So, like a lot of my chambers, the player has to think before they make a move. I'm not a fan of mindless button pressing and cube placements without looking at symbols/antlines, I like the player to really think about the consequences of their actions before they attempt something.
Beyamin Jul 12, 2013 @ 2:50pm
one of the best maps i have ever played, but you need to have a way to get back to the first room if you accidently only take one cube then remove the portal. i couldnt get back to get the second cube
Destr Jul 9, 2013 @ 2:58am
Came to a bridge. not finished. I do not like timers )
nicklonium  [author] Jul 8, 2013 @ 2:01am
It's possible, several players have made it through, including that last move. After you press the button that activates the light bridge, the player has 15 seconds to walk over to the light bridge, portal it to the right place and walk through their own portal to get to the button on the wall. Walking around isn't possible but walking through is. If you're not sure what I mean, you could download the second .dem posted by Prototype below, he successfully pulls it off after a bit of experimenting. While testing I noticed I could get to the button with a couple of seconds to spare. None of my chambers are ever impossible, I test fairly rigorously before publishing something to make sure the chamber works the way I intended. Obviously there's a few alternate methods here and there that slip through but I never publish something that's impossible.
76561197999304654 Jul 7, 2013 @ 6:18pm
If I may, I feel either that I am not clever enough, or that the lightbridge timed switch cannot get me to that isolated switch with enough time to get to it and hit it. I also feel that when I found what I thought was an appropriate portal placement (above the exit door) to get to said switch, I cannot climb it. The angle is too much, unless I am mistaken. Until I am reassured that I am correct, I deem this level impossible. So far for this one, my first attempt in your series, I consider it tough and creative, but unforunately, it is currently beyond my capabilities. Help is requested.
TribalChief Jul 6, 2013 @ 11:36pm
Thank you for the review, and I will take what you said into mind.
nicklonium  [author] Jul 4, 2013 @ 1:23am
I'm aware of that potential problem. As you said, though, it's fairly dumb so the player sort of deserves to have to start the chamber all over again. Now that I've added the timers to each button in the first room, the whole chamber can be repeated over and over if the player keeps messing up the last few portal placements.
Discrider Jul 3, 2013 @ 10:22pm
You could potentially still get stuck if you just close the doors behind yourself and then put both portals up in the end room. Not sure if you'd want to fix this though, it's a fairly dumb thing to do and cheapens the last puzzle somewhat.

Did like the first room's last funnel though.
nicklonium  [author] Jul 3, 2013 @ 3:11am
Thanks again, I could've sworn the cube respawn buttons were set to be pressed repeatedly. The chamber can still be completed without it, the player just has to think carefully about where they portal once they reach that last room and start moving cubes around. There was only 1 or 2 more moves to do so you had most of the chamber figured out already. I've tinkered with the first room so it's (hopefully) only possible to solve in the intended way. I'm glad you liked the effect in the second room, it's definitely my favourite gimmick I've created so far. Also, if you really hate turrets, Caesium might be one to steer clear of.
Prototype Jul 2, 2013 @ 6:28pm
I've played through the level twice, the first time I was unable to complete the level (got "stuck") and unable to get back to the first room. The second time I "solved" mostly as intended (I think), but also pointed out how I could still get stuck. I recorded both runs, with comments included that show what I was thinking. The first one is blind and the second is obviously less blind. https://www.dropbox.com/s/c04qvgrgmqh6diz/xenon.dem https://www.dropbox.com/s/guk2zp9t4g9yboq/xenon2.dem

no problem :D, always GLaD to help
nicklonium  [author] Jul 1, 2013 @ 3:04am
I can't seem to replicate your method but it certainly sounds like it's possible with enough time. Hopefully, I've fixed the problem. Thanks for the feedback, this is probably the chamber I'm least certain of due to it being my most recent so alerting me to any glitches or alt methods is great.
Sevrin Jun 30, 2013 @ 4:50pm
Also regarding this test, (which was well made and 1 of the harder test i'v done) in the first chamber I would swich out the portal surfaces under the turrets and put non-portal surfaces, the reason is I could get through the first part without having to get the cube, I did this by shooting a portal under the part where the lazer has to go and useing the lazercube i just shot the lazer into the lazer recever, hope this helped-
Sevrin Jun 30, 2013 @ 3:55pm
I'd like to say thanks for your comment on my test chamber :D , there are a some bugs i found (in my test) after posting it such as destroying the 3 turrets befor you swich around the pannel, but yeah thanks for the positive feedback :D
ORWELL Jun 28, 2013 @ 6:25pm
Of course I favorited it. It certianly deserved it.
I think thre main reason that this is really hard is that the ideas presented in the test are completely different from the way VALVe does it. It's a completely different mindset/way of solving puzzles. But it's still brilliant.
nicklonium  [author] Jun 28, 2013 @ 5:49pm
Thanks, that's fantastic feedback, I'm glad you enjoyed it. I recently watched a friend, who's very familiar with portal, solve this chamber and the combination of items in the first room was particularly novel (or so he said). I like to think my chambers aren't too difficulty to someone who's played a few community chambers already, Sulphur or Cobalt are probably the hardest/harshest chambers I've made so far. Thanks for adding a favourite to this chamber as well, I'm fairly sure it was you, no one else has favourited this one so far.
ORWELL Jun 28, 2013 @ 10:41am
I really like the way this map is made. It's really well done, it gives an entirely new perspective on how tests can be made. The puzzles are a little tough, but after the first room, we start to get into the type of puzzle that we're going to be solving here. The intricate simplicity made this map amazing. The aesticts and inovative gameplay make me hungry for more.
And by nitpicking, I can say that in the first room, trying to get the compainon cube down was a little strange, and I wasn't completely sure how I did it.

But seriously, freaking awesome map, dude.
(And thanks a lot for looking at mine!)
Mr.Ket Jun 26, 2013 @ 5:56am
amazing map! it took some time to get through the first room, it was hard: D
Respect to creator. My rating 5 \ 5

I've just played this one as first of Elements series. I had no problems with first 2 rooms, for good few minutes light bridge was a problem for me ;) The laser in last room needs some aiming, I needed to replace portal few times to get it right. I thought it should be stright but then it doesnt reach cube. In overall good map :) I will play rest of Elements too :)
kleinerblauerzora Jun 24, 2013 @ 10:03am
Nice Chamber! After this and Helium I want to play all your other. The picture is a little bit confusing, because the blobs in the 2nd room have no function. I needed a lot of time in the 1st room, because I wanted to use the tractor beam on the ground :)
nicklonium  [author] Jun 23, 2013 @ 2:57pm
Thanks, that's great, I'm glad you enjoyed it. To be honest I've been curious about this chamber since I published it, I wasn't sure if the last room was clear enough. I would've liked more space in the last room too, unfortunately, that's as far as the map editor goes, all I can do it make that room wider rather than longer. The intention with the last room is for the player to line up the angled laser in the corner with the laser cube and the relay, it just about lines up if done right. Although I'm fairly sure I've just thought of an unintentional solution that I might need to fix.
Monjin Jun 23, 2013 @ 12:03pm
This one really got me thinking but it wasn't too hard. It was really fun especially what you did in the last room with the lasers. I'm not sure which way you meant that the last room was supposed to be completed but I was hoping that the randomly spinning lasers would hit the last thingy. It might have been better if the last room had more space so that one would be able to see the solution better. On the other hand making the room small makes it more challenging. I loved the fact that you had companion cubes they made me realise that I would need them later. I really liked that the 2nd room was made fun, quick one to solve and that in all the rooms there would be different solving elements needed. Pure genius. Didn't notice any bugs or anything mysterious. Respect!
