Description

Attempting to bridge the gap between the mass market produced 'large' thruster and the popular after-market Titan Engine, TVSI-Tech Engineers have produced the Prometheus XL Thruster. Made using readily available components and technologies, the XL Thruster provides a deeper engine for larger crafts.

Author Notes

This is the first in what I intend to be a series of 3-4 engines, helping to cover all the size range of craft people are currently producing. The problem currently is that as ships get larger, they can only increase their engine quantity on two axis while the ship itself expands on three. Something the size of a Dreadnought will only have a tiny percentage of its volume dedicated to thrusters no matter how many you stack on the stern.

The other problem is that if a larger ship like a dreadnought COULD dedicate the same percentage of its volume to engines with stock performance, there would be no speed differential between the smallest and largest capital ships. I have thus tried to balance things out as much as possible - as engines get deeper their performance in both thrust-per-block and thrust-per-MW begin to fall. The first ensures that a patrol boat and a dreadnought with the same percentage of their volume dedicated to engines will still have a speed difference in favour of the smaller ship. The second forces the use of more and more power and should hopefully prevent small ships from stacking oversized engines. Don't misunderstand this though - having the Prometheus filling the same area of the stern instead of a large thruster will always result in superior performance by quite some margin.

If you're looking for an outright 'more powerful' engine like many of the ones released so far, this is not it. I'm a big believer when modding that the developers sets the balance for the game and user added parts should perform according to (or indeed even below) that threshold.

In short, this should fit seamlessly into the game world and remain balanced and ‘fair’.

Finally, the re-use of a lot of the stock texturing keeps the file sizes low and the feel true to the original parts.

What's the thruster damage range?

Have the dampeners on this mod been corrected yet? I will hold off on adding this to my server

Ah, I get the feeling there may have been changes of late which mean the dampening has to be set (before was just a factor of the overall power). Will investigate; thanks for the report.

the damping factor on these is crazy high. It operates normally under acceleration but when dampers are engaged, a pair of these can bring a 14,000 ton starship to dead stop in like 1.3 seconds... =\

From a forum post on the topic...

"They are 4x the volume of the stock Large.
Their thrust performance is (4 * Stock) * 0.892. This works out about 3.57x the thrust instead of the baseline 4x.
Power performance is (4 * Stock) * 1.431. This works out as using 5.7x the power instead of the baseline 4x.

In short, more power hungry, less thrust than expected but they allow for an increase on the X axis of a ship, not just the Y and Z. Larger crafts can use them to be faster, but in theory, with the same percentage of their volume dedicated to engines as a smaller ship, they will still remain slightly slower."

So it provides less thrust and consumes more fuel?

okay, its the bc-304 ;-)
would be a chalange to fit the color^^, if you want i make you a recolor without balancing changes, link me the wanted engines and i look at some myself after i find a matching color grade ;-)
