Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs; Hella Machines and Hella Pigs

(spoilers obviously)

i can't start this review without stating that going directly from The Dark Descent to A Machine for Pigs is pretty damn tough and, admittedly, very disappointing gameplay wise. the monsters are nowhere near as scary, the sanity mechanic is completely gone, you don't have to worry about flashlight fuel, and there isn't even an inventory system. the whole game is picking things up and moving them somewhere else. it feels like this game was programmed before TDD or something. but Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs is so much more than 'the worst Amnesia game'. i wrote this review after reading a review even longer than this one from somebody who had 4 hours in the game, which showed that people are ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ on this game without giving it a proper chance. maybe this is less of a review and more of a synopsis of the story, but people are clearly not even giving the game a chance before leaving bad reviews, which sucks major balls.

however, anybody who can appreciate a good story is able to look past the unfortunate game mechanics and realize that the story of AMFP is insanely deep and intense. Mandus in my opinion is infinitely more interesting and ultimately cooler than every other Amnesia protagonist combined. Tasi let half her crew die and damned the other half to a fate worse than death all to take her baby away from the one place she could actually survive, Daniel was just some random dude who went on vacation in Algeria and came back as a schizoid with a cool rock he found as a souvenir, and Henri was french.

but Mandus was a scientist who,, after his wife in died during the birth of their two children in the late 1890s, went on an expedition to mexico and found a cool rock (admittedly Amnesia has used a tweaked version of this premise like 3 times lmao), and upon touching it, witnessed every horrifying event over the next century, seeing both world wars, conditions in the Soviet gulags, the atomic bombings in Japan, drugs, disease, famine, suffering, most importantly to Mandus, the death of both of his sons in the battle of Somme in 1916. incredibly broken and still grieving the death of his wife, this proved to be too much for Mandus. he snapped, going insane, murdering both of his sons on the steps of the temple he had ventured to by snipping their precious little heads off, flying back home, starting a collection of criminals (or whoever he could get his hands on), performing horrible experiments on them, to create superhuman pig-human hybrids. Mandus' experiments, inventing, and obsession, ultimately led him to create the Machine, a giant industrial horror story, with the intent of automating mass human sacrifice, all to 'save' humanity from the horrific events of the 20th century, his life's work fueled by nothing but madness and a disdain for the human race he had devoted his life to trying to save.

the ending to this game is incredibly heavy. after forcing himself to forget everything to keep himself from insanity, eventually, Mandus learns about his horrid past as a mad scientist and fully understands the weight of what he's done, committing an unthinkable act of self sacrifice, using his own life to end the suffering caused by the Machine, all to let the world suffer in its own misery instead of his own.

TLDR: AMFP, gameplay wise, is definitely the worst Amnesia game by far. but only taking the story into account (which i feel is the optimal way to enjoy the game) it's my personal favorite by far.
