I see them. The Anglo-French bastards massing on my left flank, every banner of every colony in the entire British Empire waving right behind them. I can hear the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ whistles as they go over the top. I try to gas the bastards, bomb the ♥♥♥♥ outta them, but it doesn't matter. They just keep on coming ever closer, within rifle and grenade and flamethrower range. Pretty soon they crash through, and the whole thing devolves into an anarchic hand to hand combat situation, one that I'm doomed to lose. I send my right flank reserves in, as artillery attempts to cut them off. Another wave of Anglo bastards try to rush in, as I scramble to fire the artillery pieces to suppress them, my machine gun nests rattling away, cutting down swaths upon swaths of the bastards. This goes on for ages until the 5 minute mark, where the Franco-Anglo alliance attempts to sue me for peace. Do I take it? Knee deep in the mud and blood of the trenches? Do I lick my wounds? No. Counter attack. Over the top I go. 10/10. PTSD = realized.

I'll grind for the stuff in multiplayer. Sure.

I was playing Foy. For some reason, nobody was playing medic, so I picked it up. I forget what objective it was, but I remember my squad leader screaming for me to get down. Soon, I heard the whistle and then the booms as the artillery shells started hitting us, the sounds of machine gun fire zipping left and right. People all around me were going down and screaming for medic. Leaving the trench and throwing my smoke grenades, I ran into the gauntlet of fire, picking up teammate after teammate. At one point there was like some sort of hut thing with a wounded guy behind it. I run up to it, and legit it was a repeat shot for shot replay of that moment from Band of Brothers with Lt. Ronald Spiers running through the kick of debris from a shell. I revived this man and ended the match with the Desmond Doss award. 10/10. Just wow. What a community, what an experience. I've played RS2 Vietnam, Squad, and Beyond the Wire, and nothing comes close to how amazing this gameplay is.

My first experience of this game was my father buying me this game at CompUSA sometime in the early 2000s. It was part and parcel of my childhood. I wasn't very good mind you, but it peaked in me an interest in history. I bought it again to experience as a young adult, and experiencing it now, it really hits differently. This game is brutal when it comes to resource usage. 10/10. Good value.
