After putting some time into this game and getting curbstomped at every opportunity I think I can say it's not worth it at the moment. I have hope that the developers will fix a lot of the issues the game is dealing with in the future, but for right now the balancing is near awful and you will run into a wall sooner or later, with my wall being the Dreadnought at the end of EVERY mission that will chase you down while more and more bugs come pouring in until the Dreadnought lands a charge on you that you couldn't dodge either because of a wall to your right, or a horde of exploders that would kill you even faster to your left, or the end of the map in front of you. As I'm writing this review one of those "Watch the Developers Play!" is going on and the dude's died like-- twice while writing this.

There are also a lot of things missing from the base DRG that really make no sense to me, with NO verticallity to caves, not even so much as a ramp you can walk on, NO unique aspects to classes barring the weapons they get since your meta upgrades are universal, and worst of all: No Rock and Stone button. Joking with that last one of course, but it feels like one of those games that got bought up at the last second and got a coat of paint to disguise what it initially was, like that Starfox game for the Gamecube, which even though I know is not the case, I can't really shake considering how little the game actually pulls from DRG.

It's a really fun game, but everything and anything starts to get a timer attached to it eventually, and the game eventually stops respecting your time entirely by making you grind just to be able to take on the next tier of monster, let alone make actual story progress. I might look at this in the future if it becomes less grindy but for now it's just not worth the time it demands of me. I would recommend picking it up if you do have a lot of free time, but for a lot of people, it's not worth it.

An amazing game that I've already poured dozens of hours into on the Itch.io version. It's fun to strategize when to try and send off an immune cell or an infected cell and balance spending money for more survival or try and test your skills by forgoing upgrades so your vaccine at the end of the run can be given to more people.

The virus combination system also keeps things fresh with different types of color combinations changing how you engage with every battle when you do inevitably pop a virus infested square, giving you combos such as high HP bubble launchers or gas capsules that can go invisible, or charging virus' that can teleport.

The only thing I can knock against the game a lack certain quality of life features that would be really helpful, such as quitting in the middle of a level, or being able to toggle when you can use certain upgrades, like the cell marker. I'm one to get stuck in narrow corridors with the cell marker and having to bump back against the cell I've marked or unmarked on accident.

8/10, really great recommendation, wouldn't really recommend waiting for a sale unless you're exceedingly cheap for any reason.

A REALLY good game with simple rules and items that interact with each other in REALLY great ways to make challenging but fair puzzles that I haven't seen done this well in a long time.

The only downsides I can say is that the overly cutesy presentation can be a bit of a turn away, but beyond that, I have no issues.

As someone who's played the original Half Life well well well after its initial release with no attachment to any nostalgia that a lot of other negative reviews would have, I decided to pick up this game to see if it would improve on the original.

It does not. There are a lot of things that absolutely screw with the pacing, screw with the gunplay, screw with the level design, and screw with any and all fun you could have with the game.

One of the bigger issues I have is the lack of basic game design practices that have been in use in the entire industry for years, and even used in the original Half Life that this game decided to change.

-Making initial encounters with gameplay mechanics not function as they would in the rest of the game, such as your first HEV charger being dead outright and useless

-Changing the game to play more like a cover shooter without changing enough of either the combat or the stage design to compensate for this, with the WORST offender being the end of Questionable Ethics, where you're sent out to kill wave after wave of military in a massive firefight with next to no cover/ammo resupplies

-Constant Difficulty Shifting between next to impossible and piss easy. For every fire fight against every member of the military and their mother, you have an easy section in Xen that gives you a full health and armor recharge after slowly falling down a hole filled with lasers that repeats FOUR TIMES with free refills after every part.

-The pacing being stabbed in the back and adding on extra parts to puzzles that ruin the entire point, such as in the freezer section 3 hours in (about 30 if you're playing the original without rushing) requiring you to find a valve before you can turn a platform to cross over into another vent. Or crawl into a vent to be able to turn on the first Akira elevator. Or the ENTIRETY of Questionable Ethics.

Pros:
  • Great hint system that doesn't spell it out to you and doesn't make you feel like an idiot for using it
  • Amazing puzzle design that is really engaging and wonderful to think through
  • A very forgiving rewind system for undoing your mistakes without having to restart the entire puzzle

Cons:
  • A bit of the puzzles in the final world feel like they introduce mechanics without any connections to past puzzles, making you learn something for just that world. See: Goals creating worm food.

Overally, I'd rate it 8/10, pick it up if you're yearning for some nice worm-based sokoban. Even when it's not on sale, the $20 price tag is worth the fun.
