I genuinely have no idea how anyone at Starbreeze managed to look at the state of this game and say "I'm happy with this - I'm proud of what we've put together". PAYDAY 3 is a step back from PAYDAY 2 in so, so, so many ways that it isn't even funny. Yes, we have new and interesting mechanics for both stealth and loud, but when the base features of the game are so ♥♥♥♥ that we can't even experience them, do they really matter?

Even if you're just going into a solo run, you have to wait a good 1-2 minutes for the game to find a server for you to play on - then you have a good 30-60s of unskippable heist intro (which of course repeats if you have to reset). They swapped the controls around for no real reason (by default, marking guards is middle mouse) and removed features (you can no longer mark more than one guard/camera/civ at a time - not one each, one *total*). Yes, these may seem like minor gripes, and individually, they definitely are - but when you add them together, it gets to be too much.

I desperately want to like this game - I loved PAYDAY 2, and this seems like it could be a great game that introduces new mechanics and removes a lot of the infamous jank. As it stands, though, this is a disappointment.

The vast majority (if not all) of the "puzzles" in this mod aren't puzzles - they're trick shot showcases. "Can you hit this shot while flying through the air at 1,000 mph? Can you hit this shot while fighting the game trying to turn your camera right-side up? Also, do it within this arbitrary time limit or else you die!"

I'd hesitantly recommend this mod to speedrunners, but I can't even do that because it just feels so clunky. Getting through a chamber doesn't feel like you accomplished something that required skill - it just feels like you happened to click on the right frame.

Extremely unique core gameplay mechanic, and I hope that the devs release a way for us to make our own levels for the game. As for the length, it's a bit on the short side, so as it is (without any additional content or any way for community-created levels), I'd say get it on sale.

It's as if someone stripped out everything that makes a Zacktronics game fun and just left the frustrating bits.

UPDATE 3/11/2022
So I haven't played ED at all since the completely disastrous launch, but I saw a news article that essentially forced me to come update my review by revealing that FDev is discontinuing console development of ED *entirely* to focus on PC following this ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥.

I genuinely thought that things would be better by now - even contemplated firing up the game to see how things have changed. Now, though? I doubt I'll bother. Guess ED is going to remain untouched for another year.

Original review below

Even if there weren't *any* bugs, this wouldn't be worth $40 - or even $20. Literally all it does is allow you to run around the surface of a planet when the ability to drive around the surface of a planet is already free, occasionally shooting some people.

As it stands, I regret paying more than $5 for this mess of a launch, which has not only impacted owners of the DLC but *also* impacted people who don't own it - meaning people who haven't bought this steaming garbage pile of an "expansion" get none of the benefits and all of the drawbacks!

The "it can be patched later" mentality needs to go. If it isn't being advertised by the developers as Early Access, it shouldn't have game-breaking bugs.
