Extremely 'meh'. Doesn't hold a candle to the original. Overall impression is that this game feels like a grind basically from day one and doesn't get much better. At the time of writing finding a server with decent ping and players in game at a non-peak time is already difficult, which doesn't bode well for the lifespan of this game. I have a hard time even forcing myself to play more than 2 maps, while KF1 I could play for hours upon hours.. Only a few things are up to snuff compared to KF1, but most are plain worse.

To mention a few:
-Lackluster sound effects (worse than KF1), yes the guns look nice, but they sound like popguns mostly
-Severely lacking voice-acting in both amount and quality (with a couple exceptions)
-Cruddy radial voice command menu with less than 10 total options, most of which aren't even useful... a direct and significant downgrade from KF1.
-Shallow sci-fi aesthetic and styling, lacks the real character of KF1 and it's grindhouse styling.
-Extremely variable boss difficulty: abomination is easy win, patriarch usually can be killed before he even heals once, while King FP and Matriarch are always annoying and iffy due to their groups of bullet-sponge mobs
Gameplay is much less tactical than KF1. Usually just find myself running around flicking to shoot the hordes of crawlers and stalkers that spawn on top of you more than actually holding a defensible area or following an actual kiting route.
Top perk bonus is always a "during zed time" bonus, which changes it from mostly a fun gimmick to highlight cool kills and/or clear out some trash zeds with headshots like in KF1, to a nonsensical core mechanic.
-buggy server browser
-microtransactions and lootboxes galore

Fun times :D Took me about 22 hours to 100% I'd say probably worth the $8 regular price but absolutely worth it if it's $5 or less.

TL;DR: Absolute best game you can play with one hand.

10/10. Fantastic work, Brace Yourself Games!! [& Klei :) ]

Here's my disorganized review. I hope you find it helpful!

-Fantastic soundtrack
-Fun but challenging gameplay. Challenging difficulty from beginning. Once you get good with starting characters there are much more challenging characters to unlock (like Aria, Coda)
-Infinite replay value

-Actually allows you to practice from the menu against any enemy with any weapon once you unlock them. So if you're having trouble with a particular enemy, you don't have to wait till your next random encounter/grind to it to try to figure out or practice against it.
I think this is an essential feature for a game like this and something that more games should include, since it raises the average skill level of players and also lowers the frustration factor. More skill, less wasted time, less frustration. No reason not to include this kind of feature in most games in general.

-While you will most likely die quite often especially toward the beginning before you learn the enemy patterns and get used to how each weapon works, deaths rarely unfair once you get a basic understanding of the game (something that I can't say about a similar but also not similar rogue-like such as Binding of Isaac with 350+ hours and deaths still feel unfair sometimes). You'll almost always be able to say to yourself "Oh, I see what I could/should have done there".

-Now be forewarned, this is not an easy game. You will close this game in frustration, but at least for me the frustration never lasts long and doesn't spoil my enjoyment like some other games, especially "rage games". This is not one of those either (unless maybe you're playing with the most difficult characters hah).

-IMHO after playing this game, I think it is absolutely worth the full price, and I think the the Amplified DLC is as well. Nothing wrong with picking it up on sale though :).

I think the best way to see if you'd enjoy this game is to watch a stream or video. What got me into the game was I had a steam friend involved in the speedrunning/racing scene for the game, CoNDOR. Just from watching races and commentary
I thought I'd enjoy the game, and oh boy was I right.
Go watch somebody on Twitch such as SpootyBiscuit, TicTacFoe, or Elad for examples. Races commentated by Elad are some of my favorites. You might not understand the mechanics from the stream, but you'll definitely get a flavor.

I hope this helped!

While it's not perfect (main problem IMHO which is not unique to TF2 is team balancing, plz fix valve), when you get some decent balanced teams for few good rounds on a map you like you will understand why this game is still alive and receiving major updates after 10 freaking years and will be legendary for many decades to come.

Also hats.

Pros:
-It's a good puzzle game with a pretty good difficulty curve
-Not expensive.
-Easy for a while but gets difficult towards the end
-No gimmicky achievements, just complete all levels to beat the game and earn all achievements
-Steam Cloud integration as of June 2017! In the past there was no cloud integration and that was my only real problem with the game before since it required finishing the game on a single machine. Not a problem anymore! Thanks, Thomas!

Oh and at the time of writing this, LYNE is on sale for less $1 US during the summer sale, but knowing the game as I do now and with cloud integration I definitely think it's worth the full price of $3 US.

Cubicolor's concept is fine if unoriginal and I wanted to enjoy it, but the horrid execution kills any potential for enjoyment.

-Optimization is horrible. For extremely simple graphics (which would be fine if it ran well) I get about 5-15 fps (on the same rig that I get 45-60 fps for TF2 with good quality settings).

-Input lag, while not totally debilitating, is consistently irritating, especially when you move one space too far due to delayed input registration.

-It would also occasionally freeze at the completing of a level until I pressed ESC to bring up the menu. Again, not totally debilitating, but another annoyance and in a simple game like this a significant percentage of the experience.

-Achievements are epically bugged. I unlocked the achievement for completing all easy levels, no problem… BUT when I unlocked the achievement for completing all medium levels, the first achievement re-locked. That's right, RE-LOCKING ACHIEVEMENTS ON STEAM. How did the dev even manage that? Sadly that can only be classified as an epic failure. I have reinstalled and repeated this process twice with the same result of the easy level achievement re-locking upon another achievement unlocking.

If the achievements are fixed and the input lag and framerate are improved (say by a factor of 3) then Cubicolor would be almost worth the price for 1-2 hours of gameplay. I will say that the music and sound effects are nice for this kind of game. Hopefully it is fixed in the future.

As it is, I can only advise to either stay away or be ready to request a refund if it has the same problems on your system.

I love it.
Hook is a fun and relaxing little ambiant puzzler. Took me about an hour to complete but it's an hour I will cherish.
When you make mistakes it doesn't feel frustrating or unfair, it just makes you think.
This is one of those puzzle games like, for exampe, Hexcells, that just brings me a sense of serenity and calm. So if you need to get away from the noise and bustle of life, or even other games, this will do the trick. For me it's the kind of thing that makes you contemplate deep issues, even though there's no story or references.

Considering the short length I'd still say it's probably worth the 99¢ if you like puzzles with an atmosphere, but if it's on sale (like when I bought it) it's absolutely worth it.

Also the dev just added a single achievement for finishing the game, so for achievement hunters this is an easy 100% perfect game.

If you don't care about achievements this review doesn't really apply to you.

The game is OK and has some good humor (especially the Creepy Treat card names), but in all honesty it's very simple and pretty short, making it for many people just an easy achievement mine/perfect game completion... that is it would be.

"Tisn't the Season" for Double Fine developers to do their jobs apparently. Adding an achievement that is a pure gimmick like to "Play Costume Quest on Christmas" (which has a a description that in the first place is ambiguous to people in other countries that celebrate more on the 24th), and which siad gimmick achievement prevents people from 100%ing the game is a slap in the face. Many people on Mac and Linux systems are discussing this today and on Community guides so this is not an isolated occurance. An achievement that is ostensibly only available one day in a year being broken on that day is unacceptable. There are also reports that this has been a bug since 2012 and still hasn't been fixed.
The game is released for Mac, Linux, and PC, DF devs... you don't get to support them unequally and not get called on it.

Having steam link to the "game's website" and get a "server not found" error is a nice touch too. Par for the course it seems. Only real option if you don't have Windows is to write DF at support@doublefine.com

If you like the retro-graphics, don't mind micromanaging dumb units in RTS as the primary gameplay, and get this on sale (I got it for like $1.45 with Multiwinia during the 2014 Exploration sale) then you'll probably like it fine. Otherwise you probably won't.

The game definitely pays tribute to Tron and other such digital-grid visual experiences.
Regarding Tron, anybody else notice the bombers for airstrikes in this game are called "Invaders"? Heh.
