My literal thoughts:

1 Hr in: Okay so the mechanics are fun, cool, I see ammo is suppose to be scarce.
2 Hrs in: What's the deal with this map? It only worked during the intro I wonder is this an open world game?
3 Hrs in: No freaking way is this an open world game, I now have to get the yellow orb thing from the guy then somewhere find another.
4 Hrs in: ... Okay, 4 canisters to move to open a door... God, why ain't I getting much metal scraps anymore too.
7 Hrs in: I'm, finally out.... WAIT WAS THAT THE TUTORIAL?!
7.1 Hrs in: Dies to chainsaw pup.

10/10 Longer than Cyberpunks intro to title drop for JUST one facility.

Huh... A fan of jRPGS, more a fan of the mechanics than the story elements.... Needlessly long amounts of grind? Not gonna lie, this is the masochism I can get under. Abilities feel lacking tho, granted not that far in the game. Got to the point where the game just said "So, have fun exploring this new bigger area :)" and now I am in a pyramid wondering why I am in a pyramid but eh. This game actually made me pull a 10 hour binge play and didn't even notice.

Actually a joy and interesting to play. I thought the grind was gonna be worse than the 2nd one, but the grind was so much more tame than the DS version. Hell even the maps weren't bad to travel. I generally liked it the most out of the 3. I'm assuming for when the Super Nintendo variants come out that 5 will be the next actual-interesting one. But for the most part not regretting my money choices on this collection. Only way it could get better is since we're allowed to continue playing 'after' the final baddie that eventually we get the missing bonus content from the later editions. GIVE ME IRON GIANT AND I WILL ACTUALLY GRIND ONION GEAR. Altho I would kinda want to have a dungeon in this one like the GBA ones for 4-6 or the PSP ones for 1 and 2.

Just as painful as I remember it. Wanna punch yourself in the face to get absurd stats in 3-5 hours? ight. Difficulties using said method for casting spells. Spells can buggy since some can stack like Berserk, Protech, and even Haste. My game almost froze when I was doing it to the entire party for 5-6 rotations lol. But what really bothers me, I don't even know if this was original or not but. Enemies having built in 100% status procs that literally can end your play REGARDLESS of stat boost. I had 99 agility, 99% evasion (altho only 3x) and I could avoid normal attacks all day but given if they had a proc attached to it, oh no it's going to hit all the time. That one Malboro that can do smack the goofy out of you? take paralysis and then some. I had to save scum portions of the dungeons. All the time after..... White Mask? Black Mask was a hell to get since was running low on mana for my teleporter, who also was the only one who had Esuna on too. "Fun™"

This wouldn't of been bad if RNGesus blessed with me a Ribbon early on or from ANY Queen Lamias. Only one I got was at the dead end in Pandemonium. Jack all it did.

Only recommending it because regardless of which one you play, you gonna be punching yourself in the face, so why not the one that provokes anger and a ♥♥♥♥♥♥ up challenge? In the sense that, it could go "lol you dead now."

Going through them all, and gotta say. Even though it doesn't have the bonus dungeons from Origin or the remaster on the PSP (Still a very good rendition of the game btw). It has a charm that I thought was going to be lackluster. Pixels Remaster isn't what it should be called cause the PSP does that one better. However, there is some optimizations made here vs the others. Some that I find unintentionally good in a weird way.

The cons:
-Bad Controller Support:
Played with an 8Bitdo wireless controller, specifically the SNES30 one to recapture my nostalgia from the SNES days from 4/6. It has horrible support, but it has enough support to do the important stuff. Confirm, Go back/Run, and Menu was all I could really do with it (remapped ABXY to be proper). ABXY on the controller was backwards in game so my "Confirm" started as X.

-OG health and scaling issues:
Only time I suffered difficulty was early on in the Marsh Cave, after that I steamrolled the entire game till Chaos, and only he had the ability to one shot my thief/mages. Everything else was double digits. I really digged the scaling issues at that point cause I stored about 20 antidotes due to all the poisonous enemies inside and considering I had no White Mage or even if I did, not enough to cast it a lot reliably. Ended that trip with 3 left. ((Team Comp was Fighter, Black Mage, Thief Red Mage) Kudos if you know the ref)
That's about it on the cons

Pros:
-The mechanics are LEAPS and bounds better:
I started to do my old quick tappings on this controller and the game kept up. Usually theres some form of delay between selecting an attack or going through your items, but the only time there was a delay was funnily enough using any of the autos or something punishing. What I mean are if you hold Confirm to attack, it'll have what seems like a 0.5-1 sec delay between or even when you escape the text stays there longer than it has any right to, but hey I consider it punishable if you run even if you gonna die lel.

-Graphics:
I wouldn't so much say this is better due to the PSP but I'll admit that it's pretty damn crispy, more crispy than it has any rights it 'should' for being a Square Enix Port. And, we know Square Enix ports. HOW THE HECK WAS THIS NOT PHONE 'BAD'.

-User Interface:
Like any old FF game I'm used to, and controls go through them fast, also back on phone subject, no giant 'things' that are left open to be like a phone 'thing'. Like how FF4's 3D mobile port on steam has these giant buttons like "Attack" that just makes it scream, "press me with your thumb."

-Faithful to the original:
Except for one thing. Why can I save after defeating the final baddie but have nothing else to do? I guess for achievement hunting or maybe 'future content.' GBA/PSP dungeons, no idea. I think there's been some text updates too, but nothing that seems to differ from what it could have been. After all old text could've been as bad as "Spoony Bard!"

So uh, yeah I'd recommend.

Edit: got the 'pro' SNES30 controller and yeah, since it was programmed to be used on a switch, it has proper controls, go figure.

Checked that new 50mb update...... And even more a phone game now eh? Screw you Square. Also whoever wants a legitimate version of this, either emulate/buy the DS version if you want the identical version that isn't made to be handicapped, or what I'd even say the superior version on the PSP is. Gives you the good, as well as the bad (The After Years) as well as the GBA Dungeons. Misses out on the augments and the difficulty the DS presents, but if you want a challenge that is at least one thing the After Years does correctly. Also there's a PSP emulator out there too in case you wanted to try both first before you buy.
