X: Rebirth may seem like a strange departure for the X series, but I argue it is a return to form to fulfill one of Egosoft's founding visions.

Since as far back as X: Beyond the Frontier, Egosoft has tried to mix storytelling and complex gameplay, but they've always struggled with delivering on the story front. The stories in the X series often feature strangely translated and VA'd dialogue, out-of-place character motivations, and amateurish cinematic sections. Even so, something profoundly soulful and heartfelt lies at the core of it all. Egosoft wants to tell a story, not just one or two, but a grand story of an entire universe and its various peoples, polities, and monsters.

X: Rebirth is yet another chapter in this ever-expanding story, and it is easily the best executed and closest to a "AAA" cinematic campaign (following numerous updates and two major expansions).

Despite the even-present Egosoft jank, Rebirth succeeds where its predecessors failed in featuring immersive cinematic sections that actually involve the player character (including a fully VA'd MC, who does a pretty good job, all things considered), with NPCs who have better (albeit, still varied) voice acting talent, and an Alyx-style female companion (who is a bit fan-service-y, but that is easily forgiven when approached with a non-judgmental attitude).

Story and immersion content aside, Rebirth offers an even more complex and dynamic fully simulated game universe compared to its predecessors. While not as seamless as its sequel, X4, it does its best to try to appear seamless (which is to say, the way the game handles ship-to-dock and location transitions). To top it all off, it runs like a charm on contemporary hardware (something that X4 is still trying to get right, but it may just be a question of brute-forcing better performance as time passes and real-life tech develops and refines).

In summary, I think I love this game, but as a raw sandbox, X4 is still king. I love all of the X games, which are all flawed, but as a story and entry point for new players, X: Rebirth ain't a bad place to start!

it should be called "Highfleets" because you should ALWAYS SPLIT YOUR FLEET AND HAVE STRATEGIC/TACTICAL DETACHMENTS DOING THINGS. FOR REAL.

For it's time, a very interesting game. A very good iteration in its series.
However, it is lacking in simulation depth to bring it up to contemporary standards (without the installation of one of a few mods - and even then, questionable). The narrative aspects doesn't work well with low tax societies. They often must prompt the user over and over with the same binary (occasionally trinary, I think) "choices" that influence "X" population category(s) by "Y" % based modifiers. It is tiresome clicking so often.

If you think my review is very bad, comment and I will defend my position.

Fallout 4 is good but only if you play it on survival mode.

I've been playing Dwarf Fortress on and off since around 2013, and this latest release is the most fun I've had with it so far. My sincere thanks to Tarn and Zach Adams for their continually evolving masterwork.

Honestly, one of the best H-games I've played yet. The gameplay obviously apes Papers Please, but that works to its benefit (because Papers Please is an enjoyable and engaging game).

Bottom line: if you like PP, you'll probably like this for the gameplay alone. If you happen to enjoy lewd things in your games, make sure to get the official patch from the publisher's website. Just Google "imperial gatekeeper patch." First result, ezpz.
