Slay the Princess is one of my absolute favourites in my collection of 'strange dating simulator' games. The actor that voices 'the narrator' (etc.) is a person whose career has delighted me with their creativity and versatility - and this game does not disappoint.
This game is a puzzle, and a romance. It is a horror game, but the horror comes from every choice and exploration you make, from your very first dialogue choices, to your very last touch of a button in every moment.
This game features existential horror, narrative puzzles, and branching choices. The romance is indeed there, but you are going to have to work hard for it!

A game featuring time loops, mythology and a layered plot, with multiple endings and a lot of environmental puzzles. Each character has their motives, problems and pathways that impact the gameplay, and each ending is not truly the end - there is a lot to explore that impacts even the final solution. This game has also been given awards 🙂

This game was once banned in Australia for language around drug use, so do with that as you may. This game starts out looking like post-WWII Europe, but the world building eventually creates a world that is both similar and very different. This game explores the self, and the different motivations of the self using very literal imagery, and the exploration of who the main character is, is as much part of the story as why the main character is there in the first place, and the <spoilers> he is chasing. They face a menace in the form of a man in a 'Hannya' mask who is attempting to pull the real and spiritual world together. A perspective puzzle with much chill. The mood reminds me a bit of the stanley parable, but without the narrator voice. Sometimes you just have to keep trying things until they work; including abstract environment stuff. I found it well worth the trouble, and quite

- A slow, peaceful game.
- Reveal, explore/restore and organise the library and its furnishings
- Taking notes helps – this game includes environmental storytelling
- Collecting and crafting are involved but are not burdensome.
- This game involves a lot of reading
- Cards (but NOT deck building) is a main mechanic
- From the same universe as “Cultist Simulator”

This game is a slow game, first of all.
It’s the kind of game where you need to take your time and explore all the options – but the best part is, on the whole, there is no real penalty for time passing, other than you might lose some transient cards.
But seasons change, and options come again.

You are a Librarian of Hush House, a Library of long history that has even housed a Long at one point.
As a Librarian, you are, on the whole, cataloguing and studying the books that are found amongst the ruins of Hush House, as well as finding and purchasing new ones. Sometimes people come from far and wide and consult your library on current events. You are not at the centre of the world; you are living in a silent, insular village, and working on your own to solve your own problems, and learn all you can.

This game pushes all the right buttons for me with slow storytelling, and the accessibility options are what made this an extra win for me. You are easily able to copy text to your clipboard, and the game is windowed for a reason. There is no need to rush; no decision will cause permanent harm, and apart from losing a precious book in the maze of rooms, I have never come across a situation that has had me truly frustrated.
(Also, check around for extra secrets in the menus!)

This game has become one of my default chill games.
It's deceptively simple on the surface; you match tiles to their biomes to earn points and build a little countryscape. There is more involving quests, bonus points and more, but honestly, I just enjoy matching each piece to each other, and watching the countryside grow.

The main gameplay of Glitchhikers is of you, in a first-person space, navigating a liminal space and interacting with the beings within it.
These beings will talk to you about life and death, privacy and technology, stories and wonder.
If you have met one of these ‘hikers’ once, you will see how each of their conversations will go. There is some narrative customisation and choice, but ultimately, you will not be able to change or sway these characters’ views on anything. Nor will they usually remember you.

This is a game about meditation and introspection, with some neat music and interesting prompts.
Kudos to the ‘service station attendee’ that asks you, if you choose to speak to them, whether a particularly topic-heavy journey has left you in a negative state of mind. The suggestions for self-care are very good!

This game is a Victorian-based Capitalism/Dating sim that is adorable and hilarious. This is one of the games I turn to when I'm not feeling so great, as it has both strategy and adorable dating (facilitated by your business maid and battle butler) to regain your family fortune (as many times as you like).

Honestly, my favourite part of this game is the dates. No matter what you choose, your staff and date will go for it wholeheartedly, because you're RICH and you have staff to make it work.
Want to impress someone through a hat-stacking contest? Sure.
Pretend to hunt a mythological land-based octopus? sure.
Take your date to a club where the signature drink is 'What My Dad Drinks'? Definitely

Honestly, a large part of the game is dedicated to capitalism and gaining points towards the next date, but I get enough enjoyment out of the main game itself that the dates are like the cherry on top of an ice-cream.

It's raining outside, I'm a strange entity, I make my own hours, and my job is to make hot drinks and listen to people.
Lo - Fi beats, time and coffee.
Beautiful.
