I picked this up about 2 years ago. I love it. It is not perfect-- Valve has never been fantastic at UI/UX, but it does what it advertises and does it well.

That said:

--USE A WIRED CONNECTION--

The wireless does work, but there is lag even when twenty feet away from the modem/router with a clear line of sight. Wired eliminates the lag. Find a way to use it wired.

So get this on sale. It's great. Just...

This game was made by RPG pros and it shows. Most things that drag down an RPG experience like slow menus, obtuse/elaborate stat systems, and a presumption of audience investment are minimized, streamlined, or non-existent.

Dragonfall throws you in media res into a fairly conventional story-- a job gone wrong, a power vacuum, and you're left picking up the pieces. The initial crop of missions can be a bit of a chore at times, but they're not bad. If you're familiar with any Tactical RPG (TRPG) then you'll feel at home immediately, and if not the system is simple enough to reward any build you make. Don't stick around if the system isn't to your taste however, as the missions only get more difficult.

For a game without any voice acting, it is alarmingly engaging. The writing may not have the pretension of re-inventing the wheel, but if you give it a chance it will suck you in with interesting and rounded characters living inside of a novel world. Really, if you've read this far into my review I strongly recommend giving it a shot.

Although word of caution: if you instinctively roll your eyes at the use of magical races and counter-culture as thinly-veiled constructs to explore minority and LGBTQ political issues, as well as stalwart cyberpunk tropes of faceless, evil corporate entities ruling the world.... sit this one out.

It's great and I love it. It's just going to hit a nerve if you're one of those fragile manchildren who can't bear the thought of media exploring minority issues for drama. Like that's a new thing.

So far so good:

This game is the definition of: "If you can't do something original, then do something well."

The writing, visuals, gamefeel, and story won't win any originality awards, but all are executed with professional competence. It's a lean, mean game and I highly recommend it on that basis.

January 2018 Review: The reviews aren't lying and it breaks my heart. The selection here is great, but the slowdown and audio ♥♥♥♥-ups make everything unplayable. If there's a patch, I'd love to know about it.

---------------

June 2018 Revision:

So they updated the game and I thought I would give it a shot. While the marketing draw is VR, they did improve everything I previously complained about.

Slowdown and audio problems have been massively reduced. They've still shown up here and there, but nothing like it was. The games are all now playable and enjoyable.

I still moan a bit that the game won't properly fill my television when using my Steam Link, but I doubt many casual players will be using that to play.

In any case this game is worth your money now. I am very pleased to say that.

Without "The Offspring" and "Black Flag" the game really loses something. I don't know exactly why, but it does.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 was one of the--if not the--first video game I ever owned. I recall Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles. I remember the disappointment that was Sonic Adventure and the decade-long schadenfreude that followed. I've seen the horrors that is the Sonic fandom evolve in the grimy corners of the visible internet. I've watched the Errant Signal and Super Bunnyhop videos on what went wrong with Sonic as a franchise.

And despite all that history and nostalgia I never felt the Genesis Sonic games were that great. They were above-average to be sure, and had moments of greatness, but there was this intangible *something* that never put them into the same league as Mario or Mega Man or Castlevania. Even the decent Game Boy Advance/Nintendo DS games never really "got there."

Well.... that has finally changed.

Sonic Mania is the game that realizes the potential of 2D Sonic. The levels are long and varied. Chemical Plant Zones 1 and 2 run a clinic on this-- Zone 1 remains frustrating as ever, and it morphs into this glorious menage of new gimmicks for Zone 2. It is everything short of the developers showving a text crawl into the game saying: "We played the games too; we get it. Here's how we're going to make them fun." Then it throws you a great boss fight and sends you to Studiopolis Zone as a reward.

The rest is... well it's all good. The graphics, the music, the aesthetics, the feel of the controls it all works exactly as you'd expect a good game should. There isn't more to be said about it than that, and that's a very good thing.

----------

Tl;dr: Give this game a shot no matter where your opinion on Sonic the Hedgehog games lie. It is a great 2D Platformer--the best I've played since Shovel Knight--and worth full price.

I started playing Chroma Squad and ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ is it a joy. I doubt its wide appeal but jesus as someone who played the ever-loving ♥♥♥♥ out of the SNES Front Mission and adored Power Rangers back in 93 I'm in heaven. Chroma Squad hits that itch juuuuust right. It's one of those games that was made just for me.

Having played it for a while, I have to say that the limiting factor is a horribly designed menu system.

Being able to flip through menus and equipment/item/crafting screens is 110% key for this kind-of game and frankly... this one sucks. It's to the point where I'm on Season 3 and I barely want to continue because it means *another* long set of having to jump menu to menu to menu to compare shop item stats versus craft item stats versus what my heroes already have equipped. It is 100% kneecapping my enjoyment of an otherwise A+ game.

Pity.

Short; Sweet; Excellent

This is a true mood piece of a game. The art, the sound, the basic platforming feel all create a wonderful experience that takes just enough time to invest you in the world and with the good sense to end before dragging the design out too far.

Once the crytpic elements of the plot are spelled out it was pleasantly surprising to be so affected despite such a shopworn story. It helps that while the Tibetan aesthetics are charming they are not made to feel exotic-- merely spiritual.

I highly recommend anyone capable of a basic platformer play this game.

Worth playing, with reservations.

I backed the Kickstarter and feel I got more than my money's worth.

If you've never played a CRPG before this would be a good one to start. There is a bit of a learning curve on the controls and you might want to customize and play around a bit, but once you get a handle on things the game flows and feels really good.

My recommendation is to create custom NPCs as absolutely soon as you are able. The standard NPCs are not bad, but the more you can beef up your party in the early game the more fun you'll have with the battle system.

Inventory management is adequate. The bottomless stash is a great concept, but there's still a lot of menu micromanaging.

The story so far (about midway through Act 2) is solid enough, but pretty much all the dramatic context is buried in text. As such it requires real effort on the player's part to give a ♥♥♥♥ about what's going on. Even if you stop caring entirely, the battle system is still fun enough to justify playing.

There is a ton of replay value in trying out different parties, builds, and choices.

Ultimately an 8/10, and a solid 9.5/10 when you consider it was made on a Kickstarter budget.

Fantastic little gem of a game. It's one of those concepts that seems really obvious once you've seen it-- use player-activated vectors to mimic sound and reveal the boundaries of playable area. Then use color to identify markers such as keys and hazards.

I'm only a few missions in so I hope that music comes into play somehow, but even so at a low price this game is worth anyone's time.
