The sound of footsteps drugging through the cold dark mud echoes through the forest, not a single word spoken. Gathered in misery they slowly but surely march to the battle that could very well be their last. but they do it for duty, they do it for Rome.

freezing and weak , I wipe the sweat from my eyes and see what looks to be Marius Titus in the distance, the young roman soldier that is leading our legion in this campaign, I've never seen him in person before before but his stories and exploits raise the spirits of the men, including myself. As he walks down the front line inspecting our armor and putting a fist to our chest, reassuring us that this is our time to be heroes, and return home to see our families after a long strenuous campaign into the unforgiving Britannia forests. for a moment i close my eyes and the memory of my gardens filled with different smelling herbs, and colorful flowers with sounds of the birds chirping in the tall stone pines fill my senses. The warm touch of my wife, with the gentle smiles and innocence of my son and daughter gives me a moment of calm. His speech works to perfection.

I open my eyes and realize Marius is right in front of me. he looks down at my sword and sees that it is still stained with blood from the battle the night before, as well as my armor filthy with mud I feel embarrassed to be seen in such condition, as I was about to apologize to Marius for disappointing him he speaks to me in a calm stern voice. "A clean sword, or blood stained it makes no difference. they both kill the enemy" gives a smirk, puts his hand on my shoulder, and tells me good work son. suddenly I feel no pain in my bones, no freezing cold on my hands, just a fire burning in my heart.

The battle is about to begin, the men feel the tension in the air. the archers are readying themselves and the others are loading the catapults for action, covering the large hay stones in oil and fire.

i draw my sword , and take the breath that fills my lungs only to see the enemy slowly emerge from the trees a few hundred metres away like specters ...
