War Mongrels is a really great WW2 real-time tactics game in the same vein as Commandos, only with a more downbeat and serious twist.

The gameplay will be immediately familiar to anyone who has played Mimimi's similar RTT games (Shadow Tactics, Desperados III). One character can throw a knife, one can take out multiple enemies at once, some can distract enemies or disguise themselves etc. Bear trap? You betcha! Sniper rifle? Of course! There is nothing quite as novel as Isabelle Moreau's voodoo mindtricks from Desperados III, but they are clearly going for a more realistic and grounded story. Speaking of which, this is compounded by the devs' unflinching commitment to historical accuracy. The game deals with some seriously dark subject matter and doesn't shy away from depicting the horrors of the Holocaust.

The characters are all unique and the voice acting is pretty decent, certainly less wooden than in Partisans 1941. The British and American accents are a little bit off-putting at first, especially when many of the NPCs speak with accents that are more native to the eastern front. But I got used to it after a while.

Graphically, the game is gorgeous with lots of period detail and the visuals are complimented by a sombre and atmospheric score which sets the tone nicely.

Performance-wise, it's fair to say that the game launched in a somewhat buggy state. However, many of these bugs have since been fixed and the devs are still releasing regular patches to improve the game further. I played through the entire campaign with only a couple of minor issues. I cannot speak about the multiplayer or challenge modes, though, as I was only interested in the standard single player campaign.

Overall, it is a very solid entry into a sparse and underappreciated genre. Highly recommended!

This takes the simple yet addictive puzzling of the original and adds depth in the form of resource management.

97 hours well spent.

10/10 would choo choo again!

The core gameplay mechanics are fun (although more objectives would be nice), but some of the perks are frustrating and poorly thought out.

Also, the devs' whack-a-mole approach to game balance means that the game is constantly changing, introducing endless nerfs and buffs with every other patch. The way something works one week might be completely different the next.

Still, it is well priced and (most of the time) offers a very compelling experience. Nothing beats the rush of successfully juking a killer and watching over a rock as they wander off in search of your trail.

Freddy sucks tho.

Edit: Editing to get Steam Awards badge. Freddy still sucks.

Edit #2: Editing to get Steam Awards badge (2019). All of the above still true, except they changed Freddy completely. He still sucks, only in different ways to before.

Having never played the first game I was unsure whether to buy this, but I'm glad I did.

Pros:
Slick graphics and lighting
Silky smooth performance on my mid-range rig even with some of the Nvidia gore effects enabled
Weapon handling feels really good and the sound design is excellent
So far the community seems friendly and helpful towards noobs like me
So much offal!

Cons:

Some bugs
Needs more maps
Needs more weapons

Pretty much everything that's wrong with it can be attributed to its early access status. This game is already very polished and a blast to play, so all they need to do is iron out some bugs and add new content.
